Title: 1.7 Our Mrs Reynolds
Persephone - September 27, 2004 09:42 AM (GMT)
After a celebration in which the crew is honoured for ridding a planet of a group of bandits, they return to Serenity, to find a woman named Saffron, who claims that Mal married her during festivities
Crichton Kicks - October 10, 2004 07:58 PM (GMT)
Firefly at it's best in this one I think.
It could almost be used as a showcase for Whedon's diverse range of humour, from the subtle to the not so. Saffron's a great character, praise the Lord she lives to fight another day
As far as the characterisation goes there's some pretty important stuff for Mal and Inara. Inara sure does take it hard upon discovering that Mal's married.
And Jayne's gun even has a name
Pretty much a bottle show, if I had to find fault with this one, I'd be incredibly hard-pressed to do so. Along with Bushwhacked, probably the pick of the bunch so far.
Inara:- "So, explain to me again why Zoe wasn't in the dress?"
Mal:- "Tactics, woman! Needed her in the back. 'Sides, them soft cotton dresses feel kind of nice. There's a whole airflow."
Inara:- "And you would know that because...?"
Mal:- "You can't open the book of my life and jump in the middle. Like woman, I'm a mystery."
Inara:- "Best keep it that way. I withdraw the question."
Book:- "If you take sexual advantage of her, you're going to burn in a very special level of hell. A level they reserve for child molesters and people who talk at the theater."

I dont think I have laughed as much for ages as I did at the first 15 mins or so of this episode.
Brillently written and well acted throughout, this is definately my favourite episode of the crew of the serenity so far.
Just a shame Safron had to be one of the bad guys thats all. (Cannot wait to see her in TRASH but I am going to watch the episodes in order.)
as for Inara, if nowhere else this episode shows that she is in love or at least has very strong feelings for Mal.
laughitupfuzzball - February 22, 2005 11:09 PM (GMT)
Great dialogue in this episode, love Mal's predicament and the way the crew taunt him. Book is great, with his special kind of hell, very funny guy.
Loved Vera getting a spacesuit
:lmao:

You see, Vera? You dress yourself up, then you get taken out somewhere fun. |
lovely little touches.
Just how could Inara get away with people not realising she kissed Mal, including him
she kind of wanted him to know though :(
Outta Sight - February 23, 2005 09:07 AM (GMT)
This is a great episode, probably my second favourite. I loved Mal's war with himself over Saffron's proposal (it's been a long time etc....) and Jayne's gun obviously  First time I watched it I was surprised at every turn, from Mal finding himself with a wife in the first place to her turning out to be a baddie, and it kept me hooked throughout. Joss at his best :D

Absolutely
I love this episode, especially the scenes between Mal and Inara
Kaylee: It was your big make-out session that got us into this, sir.
Mal: I was poisoned!
Inara: You were drugged.
Jayne: That's why I never kiss 'em on the mouth.
:lmao:
Stewie Griffin - March 2, 2005 03:30 AM (GMT)
I would put this down as my favourite episode of the series, and was the one, when on my first viewing, that I realised I had come across a real gem in Firefly. The interactions and dialogue between the characters are first-rate especially those concerning Mal who has some great exchanges with Book, Inara and Saffron, and the comedy was unsurpassed (from the opening scene, Book's warnings and the introduction of Vera). If I had a complaint, the escape of Serenity from the net was a little weak, but otherwise Joss had crafted a cracking episode.

Hello! Its great to be here!
Cardelia - March 24, 2005 11:59 PM (GMT)
This is my favourite ep up to this point. The script really was superb for this ep. The plot naturally lent itself to the comedy, but even so, it was brilliantly done.
Although it was nice to see Joss thinking about the logistics of firing a gun in space, I don't get why Vera needed a suit. Presuming Vera works on the same basis as modern guns, gunpowder doesn't need external oxygen to ignite, just a spark which comes from the firing mechanism.
Saffron is one of my favourite bad guys, ever. It helps that she's really quite attractive, but she's so versatile and has a wicked turn of phrase. Although I'm not a fan of redeeming the bad guys, I do think a spot on Serenity could have been found for her. Even if it's just as a gun for hire, to have her around for a few episodes would really have thrown a spanner in amongst the crew dynamics.
buffy_fan1 - April 21, 2005 08:38 PM (GMT)
this is the first time I've which the episode I really enjoying Firefly I'll hopefully get the rest of the season watch this weekend  which is a good news bad news thing I seeing how it all turns out but then I'll have to wait till Serenity comes out to get my next fix.
Anyway there is one thing I'm not sure of are the people of the town I can't remember the name of the town/plant in on Saffron's plan to ambush the Serenity? It would seem an odd way to thank them after helping them out?
When Saffron is in bed waiting to seduce Mal and after her Bible reading I said "good Bible" just I finished when Mal says the same thing
Do people who talk at theatre? If so I'm in trouble
Yay-For-Me - June 8, 2005 07:01 AM (GMT)
What a brilliant episode
Really funny at the beginning when Saffron tells them she's married to Mal :lmao: and the taunting by the rest of the crew.
I think this has been my favourite episode so far. Wonderful entertainment
willowroolz - June 8, 2005 07:28 AM (GMT)
It's a corker, that's for sure :)
Gotta love the crew ripping the proverbial out of Mal
Nick - June 14, 2005 09:38 AM (GMT)
This is a JW special :yahoo: incredibly enjoyable and engaging
Saffron is just yummy, who the hell is she? I don't think I've ever seen her on telly before.
Most of my favourite bits have already been mentioned but the opening scene with Jayne going '' she's powerful ugly'' and Mal's protests, had me in such hysterics I had to rewind the shooting. :lmao:
Isn't wo.rking from home great ;)

You have, you know. She was in the Angel episode The Prodigal and an episode of Tru Calling ;)
Outta Sight - June 15, 2005 09:30 PM (GMT)
Watched this episode again tonight on the weekly Sci-Fi channel showing and chuckled to myself when I saw that it was Captain Acevada from The Shield as one of the bad guys in league with Saffron :lmao: Hadn't seen The Shield when I saw Firefly 1st and 2nd time round so always funny to see someone in your fave show after the fact :lmao:
willowroolz - June 16, 2005 08:10 AM (GMT)
I'd forgotten about that, it was amusing to see him
I wonder if he was one of David Aceveda's descendants :ponder:

I watched this episode last night and I laughed when I realised it was him  Like Katie I hadn't seen The Shield last time I watched this epi so it came as a nice surprise :D

Such a fun ep. ( Vera ! :lmao: ) that I`m tempted to get out my Buffy DVDs .
melian - June 16, 2005 04:05 PM (GMT)
I love how smug Wash is when he says he only got knocked out by a blow to the head, and how proud Zoe is of her husband
endgame - June 20, 2005 06:04 PM (GMT)
Definitely the best episode so far. I don't think I've ever laughed so much! Highlights were Mal dressed as a woman, the crew making fun of his marriage and Jayne asking to trade Saffron for a gun (how surprising that his prized possession would be a HUGE gun :lmao: ). That Saffron was a baddie was a nice twist and I liked how the episode seamlessly moved from hilarious to very tense.
I also liked how this episode gave more insight into the relationship (or non-relationship) between Mal and Inara. His feelings were made clear in "Shindig" and hers were made even clearer here. I almost threw something at the tv and shouted "Mal you idiot" at the end when Inara looked as though she was ready to admit that she kissed him when she thought he was dead but instead he made a joke about her kissing Saffron and walked out. Men!

Snap, stupid man. I could have happily slapped him for that
ant - July 8, 2005 08:02 PM (GMT)
This episode is really funny. I really thought the beginning was funny. Mal pretending to be the wife. :lmao:
Nice little party scene. Didn't notice Saffron at first, in the party scene, but seen her this time round. I always notice different things each time I watch it.
I thought it was a really funny part when he first saw her on Serenity. Zoe's reaction was the best. Book has a really dirty mind! :lmao: Saffron making him dinner and Wash being jealous was a highlight of the series! I thought the line Saffron said to Mal about cleaning his feet was hilarious!
The "Vera" scene was the best thing ever, I thought Jayne was great then. How he could keep a straight face I do not know! Best thing ever!
Saffron leaving Mal out cold and knocking out Wash was just mean! <_<
Anyway, this episode gets a 8.5/10 because of the funny scenes!
laughitupfuzzball - July 8, 2005 09:08 PM (GMT)
 I think Inara's scenes after the kiss are hilarious too, how did she get away with it
endgame - August 5, 2005 05:54 PM (GMT)
Just watched this again (felt the need to watch something funny). Sheer class
Mal: "But she was naked and all ........ articulate" :lmao: :lmao:
Dot Matrix - August 6, 2005 11:29 AM (GMT)
Our Mrs. Reynolds is probably my favourite episode (with Jaynestown a close second), Firefly does humour well and this ep. really shows the interaction between the different crew members, including Inara kissing Mal.
I'm sure I read something somewhere about Joss saying it was one of the best tv episodes he has ever written.
No-one has mentioned the deleted scene though - with River wanting to marry Simon. It is very funny (although possibly responsible for some scary fanfiction :x )
Fangy and grrr - August 9, 2005 12:01 AM (GMT)
Without doubt one of the funniest episodes.
Nearly everything has been mentioned but I did like Saffron's attempt to seduce Wash and when she rolls her eyes when he starts talking about how much he loves Zoe and then when she bumps into Inara and they both rumble each other :
" your good "
" Your amazing ".

My missus has a theory on deleted scenes - namely that the reason they're deleted is because they are not good enough.
I'm not sure i agree - I think I'd like to see all the scenes that relate to the script as envisaged by the writers. This is as opposed to re-writes requested by the network, for example.
In this case though, I agree with me missus: i didn't like the scene - I thought it was a little weird and the episode benefitted from it's absence :)
laughitupfuzzball - August 9, 2005 03:36 PM (GMT)
I think scenes are deleted as there isn't enough time to fit them into to finished cut or they just can't w**k them in as planned.
That scene with River is just a little too freaky
goth willow fan - August 9, 2005 04:00 PM (GMT)
If a scene is filmed but cut from the final print it is usually for time reasons or as Alex says sometimes a scene just doesn't "w**k".
Unnecessary plot points are usually cut from a script before filming starts.

For some reason I'd forgotten how fantastic this episode is. Rewatched it last night and was totally blown away by it's fantastic-ness. I don't think I stopped laughing once, it's just a joke a minute right from the start- with Mal in his flowery bonnet  . Well, until the very end scene with Inara when I was shouting at Mal for being so stupid... Anyway, really brilliant episode, possibly the best... best comedy one at least.

kayley: maybe you shouldn't ...
mal: maybe i should because we are the only two who doesn't find the situation hilarious (without noticing inara face)
lots of excellent funny bits (wash trying "not" to compare zoe and saffron quality)
jayne jealous and ready to trade saffron against his best gun, book warning mal (when was mention saffron "age"?)
the set up and the team saving themselves
mal finding saffron and telling her what the what
a very good episode, really funny and you can't see the twist coming ...

I agree. Easily the best episode so far. Generally wow and totally engaging. It felt really fast and the plot twists were brilliant. The actress was absolutely fantastic with the episode turning on her performance.
In general really compelling. If the film had been anything like this I would have totally loved it. I am inclined to give it a 9/10. sk

I have to agree Mal must be blind if he can't see that Inara is crazy about him she just w**king the nerve to tell to admit it and he says Mal that and walks off. Mal you big dumb ass! I don't think Inara got away with I think Simon knew what happen after all is a Doctor but wasn't going to embarrassd her by tell the truth.
Just why Zoe so annoyed with Wash it wasn't he flirted with Safron well not really just paid her a complementedabout her cooking. Zoe just has a go at him for now reason and storms off I don't understand women.
Vera needed 02 to fire hence the need for the suit so surely it should have only to fire one shot because after the the helmet was broken so how come 3 shots were fired? :ponder:

"Our Mrs. Reynolds." A recent post on the screenwriting blog, Complications Ensue, examines what elements in the script make this episode so engaging.
