Title: 1.5 Shindig
Persephone - September 27, 2004 09:33 AM (GMT)
In order to secure a job transporting cargo off-planet for a client, Mal attends a social event where a dance with Inara, leads to him being challenged to a swordfight, in defence of her honour
Crichton Kicks - October 9, 2004 10:14 AM (GMT)
Another interesting episode.
Not quite up to the standard of the past few episodes but still pretty good. A bit of continuity there with Badger returning, although how he fell for River's accent I'm not too sure, perhaps he's a little deaf
Nice insights into how Society works in the 'verse. It would appear that the class-system is alive and well, if anything resembling that of the 18 hundreds.
Kaylee gets to get out and about, and Mal manages to land himself in yet more trouble;
Inara: - "There's a back door, you're going to use it..."
Mal: - "Hell no, I don't run."
Inara: - "Yes you do. You run all the time."
Inara:- "Are you in pain?"
Mal:- "Absolutely. I got stabbed, you know. Right here."
Inara:- "I saw."
Mal:- "Don't care much for fancy parties. Too rough."
Inara:- "It wasn't entirely a disaster."
Mal:- "I got stabbed! Right here!"
The Joss one-liners (or three-liners) are abound in Firefly perhaps moreso than any of his other shows. I can't much tell if that's intentional or if the actors on Firefly are just that bit better with the comedic stuff. I'm inclined to think it's a bit of both.
Love the 'cargo' as well.
ken1701e - October 21, 2004 11:13 PM (GMT)
Perhaps not as good as some of the episodes that have gone before I found this episode interesting. Again some excellent one liners and as Angel has pointed out an insight into the world of Inara.
Kaylee's experiences at the party were also interesting with the 'falsehood' of the women there and the fact that the men found her to be the most interesting of creatures because of her lack of this falseness.
Of course the main aspect, for me. of this story is it once again highlights the fact that Mal is so obviously in love with the gorgeous Inara and I think they both know it, yet, neither of them are willing to do anything about it.
Good episode but not as good as what has gone previous.

Jayne: What we need is a diversion. I say Zoe gets naked.
Wash: No!
Jayne: I could get naked...?
Wash and Zoe: No!
Jayne: We was just about to spring into action, Captain. Complicated escape and rescue op.
Wash: Very exciting. I was going to watch.
Zoe: Planet's coming up too fast.
Wash: That's just cause I'm going down so quick. Likely I'd crash and kill us all.
Mal: If that happens, let me know.
Kaylee: Yes, sir, Captain Tightpants.
Mal: Use of a s-what?
Harrow: You have to finish it, lad. You have to finish it. For a man to lay beaten... and yet breathing? It makes him a coward.
Inara: It's humiliation.
Mal: Sure. It would be humiliating. Having to lie there while the better man refuses to spill your blood. Mercy is the mark of a great man. (lightly stabs Atherton with the sword) Guess I'm just a good man. (stabs him again) Well, I'm all right.

Sorry, really couldn't resist the urge to quote... :ph43r:
laughitupfuzzball - February 22, 2005 06:26 PM (GMT)
Sensuous episode, beautiful ball contrasting with the harsh reality on the dirt streets.
How sweet Kayleigh got to go the ball in her disgusting dress bleuggghh, Mal does seem to have a problem, insulting Inara's choice of proffession and yet from the off you know he wanted to go to the ball.
Full of humour as mentioned all the way through, a light hearted episode showing us the relationships aboard Serenity
I suppose the 1800's symbolise decadence for Joss, seems a recurring theme (Angelus/Darla years), when the rich were at pains to show it no matter the cost.
Outta Sight - February 25, 2005 03:06 PM (GMT)
I thought it was so sweet when Kaylee settle herself on her bunk and puts the music on and admires her dress. Obviously reminiscing about the one bit of glamour she'll probably ever get :( Bless 'er :D
laughitupfuzzball - February 25, 2005 04:01 PM (GMT)
Yes its so sweet poor thing, she is always so in awe of Inara and yet given the choice she loves her engines
willowroolz - February 25, 2005 05:19 PM (GMT)
Kaylee's got no reason to feel that way, she's lovely
Hate those other women for picking on her <_<

I love Kayleigh, she's...... cute :)

Ah, but she held her own and ended up having all the admirers and even inspiring a guest to insult the "pretty girls" on her behalf, LOL. I have to say though, as a girlie, that dress was atrocious :lmao:
Cardelia - March 24, 2005 11:37 PM (GMT)
I thought this was the weakest of all the eps. It was mainly let down by the ballroom scenes, even though the ending was full of the Joss (well, Jane Espenson) sparkle.
I saw this with commentary and it was strange how much JE mentioned Joss rewrote scenes. It cropped up a lot more than in her Buffy commentaries, so maybe this was indicative of how much more Joss was involved with Firefly?
ETA: the shopping scenes were filmed at Universal, Hollywood! I thought the set looked familiar but I didn't realise that I'd actually wandered round it until it was mentioned on commentary.

This is the first episode of Firefly i have ever seen so please bare with me,i've not got a good memory with names.I must say the first 5 minutes were boring,i had the urge to tune out but i stuck in there for the sake of it and i'm glad i did,i rather enjoyed the episode.
First impressions:
I liked kaylee's character she was very erm sweet and even simple. Those girls at the party were bring mean to her and i thought her dress was great.Mal wasn't being to nice to her either about her dress :ermm:
I thought Inara's dress looked good aswell though she did seem a little :snooty: .
Zoe and Alan getting hot and sweaty :ph43r:
WAs it River Tam who has some sort of problem because she was acting weird ;)
Captain and Arthur's duel was kind of funny because of the way Captain was fighting.
Though his episode wasn't great it was still good enough to make me want to see moe. :)

You did quite well with the names Arooj, much better than me after one episode
Really didn't like Kaylee's dress, thought she looked like candy floss  Enjoyed the fight at the end, glad that Mal was noble and let Atherton live
Thought the cargo was very funny :lmao: the way Mal and Inara were just sitting watching the cows was good.
Can't wait until next week when I go to town and buy the whole series
Krazy - June 1, 2005 10:13 PM (GMT)
I guess you Carla would have been one of those girls laughing at Kaylee at the party.
I knew that Mal was going to let Artherton live even though he deserved to die with an attitude like his, thinking he owned Inara.Oh yeah Nathan Fillion does a great job playing Mal

No, I wouldn't have laughed at her as I'm too nice and I have no dress sense

:ph43r: I would have been pointing and laughing
glad you enjoyed it Krazy. I must admit this episode grows on me the more I see it, which I have been tending to do a lot.
I so love the fight with Mal's poking Atherton with his sword

9/10
melian - June 15, 2005 09:57 AM (GMT)
I love this episode. I think it makes me smile and laugh more than the last few which have tended to be more serious, or at least a lot scarier. Though I must admit to having held my breath during the sword fight :fear:
laughitupfuzzball - June 15, 2005 11:06 AM (GMT)
Its quite a romantic episode, about as romantic as Firefly gets anyway  concentrating on Inara & Mal's frustration with one another and having a truce of sorts at the end, its really well written
melian - June 15, 2005 11:41 AM (GMT)
As with all the Firefly epsiodes there are just too many wonderful little moments to count, but a couple of my favs (that no-one else has mentioned yet ;) ) are the look on Zoe's face when Mal insults Kaylee (if looks could kill  ), followed by Jayne saying 'Is she mad or something?'. He's so clueless :p
willowroolz - June 15, 2005 11:49 AM (GMT)
Can I just put in a word for Kaylee and the strawberries? Mmmm, mmmmm  :ph43r:
laughitupfuzzball - June 15, 2005 11:51 AM (GMT)
 Yes I love Zoe's character and I think its important that she is in the mix.
The character would normally be given to a male to play so its interesting to see her so tough when she is also very beautiful and see the odd glimpses of her feminine side :)
She is often on the periphary of the action but her comments and looks are superb!

Kaylee is just so lovely throughout the entire episode, in fact throughout the whole series :D
melian - June 15, 2005 12:06 PM (GMT)
I feel the need to quote
Kaylee: (indicating a pink frilly dress, something out of Gone With the Wind) Say, look at the fluffy one.
Zoe: Too much foofaraw. If I'm going to wear a dress, I'd want something with some slink.
Wash: You want a slinky dress? I can buy you a slinky dress. Captain, can I have money for a slinky dress?
Jayne: I'll chip in.
Zoe: (to Jayne) I can hurt you.

I thought this episode was okay. A few nice moments between Mal and Inara (will they ever get it on?). It was nice to see them having fun away from the ship, although Mal had to spoil it by getting involved in a swordfight!
A nice change for Kaylee getting to wear a dress (even if it reminded me of those tacky loo roll covers with the doll in them that you used to get), and I thought Mal scrubbed up rather well.
Can't think of anything else to say, enjoyable but forgettable.
ant - July 5, 2005 05:56 AM (GMT)
I watched this episode last night.
I really thought the opening scene was good. Cool fight and pool scene.
When they first arrived in Persephone, Mal was really, really nasty to Kaylee, and Jayne was the only one that laughed! But when Mal brought her that dress, she was happy and I think it made up for it.
I thought the sword fight was brillient! Glad Mal beat him.
Overall I give this episode 8/10. Not the same as my last review.

Dot Matrix - August 6, 2005 11:35 AM (GMT)
I liked this episode because it has romance and humour, two things which Firefly does well, for all the brooding about the war and running from the alliance and reavers that goes on.
John Brawn - December 12, 2005 05:26 PM (GMT)
Fairly enjoyable with Jane Espenson's trademark effortlessness. sk
