Title: Do I Have To Watch The Movie?

ken1701e - September 12, 2004 01:46 PM (GMT)
As some of you will know yesterday I went and bought season 1 box set of STARGATE but do I have to rewatch the movie first before I start on the series?

Thought the movie was crap the first time I saw it!!!

It's not essential Ken. It helps if you know what happened in the movie, but the basics are covered in the S1 pilot episode Children of the Gods.

Just enjoy ;)

Never watched it - in fact Krystal and I have rented it out so we can finally see it, just so we can say we have :)

You'll wish you hadn't Phillip.

Pillows and duvet at the ready ;)

We've survived worse :D

Now, Angel's 'Why We Fight' - that's a different matter :)

B5's Born to the Purple always does it for me. Three times that one's put me to sleep. The first of which nearly proved pivotal in me missing what would become a great series

Shame on you - BttP is a Mollari episode, which immediately makes it worth watching :)

No, it doesn't, it really, really doesn't. In fact you can use this episode alone to shoot that theory down

I rewatched the movie before I started watching the series, Ken. I don't think it's essential at all, but there are some nice bits of continuity between the two that made me smile.

The box of tissues was a nice touch ;)

I can think of at least 2 people against your one to support my theory :)

We'll soon see when the Big Rewatch gets to that episode :P

I saw the movie at the cinema when it first came out. It sounds like i am an only one on here as i actually like the movie. At the time the effects were pretty good. I also prefered Daniel's woman in the movie than Michael Shanks' wife who played her in the tv series. I don't know how to spell her name hence me not typing it. ;)

I also liked the kid who played Skaara, it was nice to see him return in the tv series.

Viv! I liked the movie--the first half better than the last half. It was very watchable. I rented the DVD with commentary a short while ago.

I especially loved the late Viveca Lindfors as the older lady who recruits the Dr Jackson--her last film, I think. Comparing the screen presences of Kurt Russell and Richard Dean Anderson, it's easy to see why the latter never became a big star. Spader was excellent at portraying an absent-minded type. "Mili Avital" is the name you're avoiding--an appealing Israeli actress.

Darris - September 12, 2004 10:04 PM (GMT)
Actually John the name i couldn't spell was Sha'uri, so thank you for telling me her real name. Of which i wouldn't of been able to spell either! Why it didn't occur to me to look at the IMDB like i just have is a mystery.

I thought she had more screen presence than Vaitiare Bandera (don't you love the copy and paste button!) did.

So how many "boring" episodes do we have to sit through before the show gets good? ;)

goth willow fan - September 12, 2004 10:36 PM (GMT)
It's not that bad to begin with but half way through the first series is when things start to get interesting and you realise this isn't just another MOTW show.

How did you know I used copy-n-paste? Is there a telltale or something.... :ph43r:

I liked the first half an hour, but as soon as they went through the gate I found it incredibly dull :(

Infection's not too hot, and you could argue the case for TKO as well, although that does have a few saving graces, which I won't go into here :)

I'd concur with Paul. There are a few duffers in the first half season, but unusually for a show in it's infancy, there are a few classics there as well.

The second half of the season is a lot more consistent.

You tell me all this after I have bought 2 box sets!!!! :D

You've no need for concern Ken, trust me ;)

Well, remember TNG - the series that in it's first two seasons bought us "gems" like Code of Honor, Angel One, Justice, Shades of Grey, Up the Long Ladder, The Outrageous Okana....

Need I continue? :P

Crichton Kicks - September 13, 2004 10:52 AM (GMT)
<cough> The Dauphin <cough> :x

Rest assured Ken, B5 doesn't take three years to get going ;)

Also, Justice would have been a great episode, had they followed through and actually killed Weasley
