Title: The Shatner Arc

QUOTE
Star Trek: Enterprise show-runner Manny Coto has told a magazine that if William Shatner makes a guest appearance on the show, he may not play Captain Kirk, nor an ancestor of Kirk.

TrekBBS members reported that in the latest Star Trek Communicator magazine, dated October 2004, Coto stated that if Shatner had time to do the series, he would appear in a three-story mini-arc like the one in which Brent Spiner (Data, Dr. Soong) is taking part.

"It would be a great episode if it did work out...it's not a Kirk or an ancestor of Kirk, but that's all I want to say. I don't want to give away anything, but it's very cool," said Coto, who is featured in a photo in much younger days watching the original series on television. In addition to himself, Coto described the current writing staff as "all Trek nerds, a room full of Trek nerds! And we know all the the Star Trek touchstones we want to do. It's like we're coming up with all the great stuff I've always wanted to do on Star Trek."

Coto revealed that in addition to the five scripts for which he received writing credit during Enterprise's third season, he assisted with the script for "Twilight" and did uncredited work rewriting the script for "Damage".

On the subject of the likelihood that the fourth could be the last season of Enterprise, "There's always the possibility this could be it, but nobody's assuming that at all," Coto insisted. "In fact, we are pulling all the stops; I want this year to be the best Star Trek year ever. Hopefully, that will translate into great ratings and fan love. If not, then the show will end - but it will end on a great note!"

I'm not sure about this.

They finally get (well, if they do) get Shatner on board and they don't have him playing Kirk one last time ??

The words 'missed' and 'opportunity' spring to mind. If that particular arc doesn't turn out well, I'll be hard pushed to cut them any slack I think :(

jamiearmour - September 12, 2004 11:14 AM (GMT)
It does sound as though they have a plan though!!!

But of course this could be pure misdirection for our benefit

Crichton Kicks - September 12, 2004 11:16 AM (GMT)
Thing is though, this is probably going to be Shatner's last appearance in the Star Trek universe. To have him NOT playing Kirk, for me is a little sad. Likewise, if not Kirk, then at least one of his ancestors :(

This whole Shatner thing was ill-conceived from the start. Bringing Shatner into Enterprise can only be an anticlimax, and (unlike Nimoy in TNG) is so obviously a desperate stunt to try and save the sinking ship that is Enterprise.

Why the hell can't they just try and write 22 good stories that don't require publicity casting (hello, Spiner) and tryand save the series full time, rather than for a few weeks when they have a special guest star...

Crichton Kicks - September 12, 2004 02:50 PM (GMT)
Let's face it, they could have an episode with Kirk, Picard and even Seven getting her assets out and it still wouldn't pull in bigger ratings than it's getting now.

Star Trek has never increased it's year on year ratings, not once. Not TOS, not TNG and not DS9. Now, Enterprise has to achieve this to stand any chance of surviving into a fifth year.

Not to sound too pessimistic but it's never going to happen. As such, like you say, forget the gimmicks, just close the show out with a grandiose arc.

It would improve their showing in the lesbian demographic as well.

But pass me and the doc a sick bag.

Now Trip getting his kit off........................................

I don't care what it would do for the ratings but it would do something for me :shifty: :D :D

Frankly I'm amazed that Berman and Braga haven't hit upon this 'sure fire' ratings winner yet

Although, I guess there was that episode of DS9 where Dax gets it on with one of her former female lovers

Oh dear, can't blame B&B for that one. Still, tastefully done, which is more than would be said for anything dreamt up by the chuckle brothers.

Never have you said a truer word!!!

It's funny. You can trace back just where Trek starting going down the pan, to pretty much the time when Seven comes aboard. Which is a shame, Jeri Ryan's a talented actress, it's just B&B seem to excel in exploitation

Well there's no denying that it bought a few points to the party

Just a shame that they were so obviously 'look we have someone with big breasts, please watch us' material

Which in itself wouldn't have been so bad, but the show completely relied upon Seven all to often. B&B just decided to pamper to the Mutant X crowd and thought that pretty girlies made up for a lack of plot. Pair of f*cking idiots

They're probably figuring why bother. Cancel Enterprise after Season 4 and then you don't need to sack them, just shuffle them out of the way, in time for a new Trek show.

Well, hopefully

Hardly fair on the cast of ENTERPRISE though especially after all the improvements last season!!!

It certainly isn't, but network television rarely is :(

Compare, though, to the cast of shows like Firefly and Angel, where the show was cancelled as well, despite being a lot more popular and a lot more successful than Enterprise!

The Enterprise cast have been very lucky - had the series not got the Star Trek name, Enterprise would have bitten the dust years ago...

Plus, of course, it's their choice to stay on - they've known Enterprise is a sinking ship, and if they want to jump off before it dies entirely, they could always do it :)

Crichton Kicks - September 13, 2004 10:47 AM (GMT)
Both Enterprise and Voyager have traded off the Star Trek heritage. Not even that would have saved Voyager if it weren't for the fact that UPN had trumpeted it as the network's flagship show. As far as Enterprise is concerned, look how quickly they've decided that it should have Star Trek in it's title ;)
