Title: Good/bad Covers
Darris - September 3, 2004 11:06 PM (GMT)
What in your opinion are some good cover versions? And what cover versions are to be avoided?
Good
Paradise Lost - Small Town Boy (Bronski Beat)
Sepultura - The Hunt (New Model Army)
Moonspell - Love Will Tear Us Apart (Joy Division)
Apocalyptica - Fade To Black (Metallica)
Icon and the Black Roses - Running Up That Hill (Kate Bush)
Bad
Anything by HIM. They are terrible at all the covers i have heard by them.
Atomic Kitten are pretty good at destroying a song too. The Bangles song springs to mind.

Atomic Kitten couldnt sing a song well if their lives depended on it.
On the whole I am not keen on cover versions at all but I will have to think about this one!!

I detest cover versions on principle. There are about 5 I can stomach. For the poor ones like Tin Tin Outs Here's Where the Story Ends I would quite happily see public flayings introduced.
Wild Horses - The Sundays
Hot Burrito #1 - Belly
Are You Experienced - Belly
Only in Dreams - Ash
No thats about it - 4 :)
Persephone - September 3, 2004 11:15 PM (GMT)
I don't know many good covers.
Good
Nick Cave - Stagger Lee (old Blues classic)
The Mission - Dancing Barefoot (Patti Smith)
Orgy - Blue Monday ( New order)
Bauhaus - ziggy Stardust (Bowie)
Tigertailz - Creeping Death (Metallica, trust me, it's brilliant ;) )
1000 Homo DJ's - Supernaut (Black sabbath)
Revolting Cocks - Do You think I'm Sexy (Rod Stewart)
Funny
The Sisters Of Mercy - Jolene
Bad
Too many to list
Guns'N'Roses- Knocking on Heaven's door :x
goth willow fan - September 3, 2004 11:18 PM (GMT)
Good -
Rammstein - Stripped (Depeche Mode)
Inkubus Sukkubus - Paint it Black (Rolling Stones)
Tiamat - Sympathy for the Devil (Rolling Stones)
Nine Inch Nails - Physical (Adam and the Ants)
and I heard a killer version of Personal Jesus (Depeche Mode) played live by Ensoph a week ago.

I do have Tigertailz version of creeping death. I was shocked when i first heard it, i didn't think Kim Hookers voice would be able to pull off a Metallica number. Their rendition of Megadeth's Peace Sells isn't that bad either, although i do prefer the original.
Speaking of Jolene, Queen Adreena covered that, featuring the girl from Daisy Chainsaw and it wasn't too bad.

A good cover that comes to mind for me is Marilyn Manson - 'Tainted Love'

I like the 'original' cover version by Soft Cell
willowroolz - September 4, 2004 11:34 AM (GMT)
The worst one I've ever heard is Mariah Carey's version of Def Leppard's Bringing On The Heartbreak. The woman/dolphin should be shot.
I always liked Thunder's version of Python Lee Jackson's In A Broken Dream - Danny Bowes has got a great voice for that kind of song.
Persephone - September 4, 2004 11:41 AM (GMT)
There is something I hate more than cover versions. When 'bands' take a good song, rip it to shreds, and then rap over the top. Public shootings for those, I seem to remember somebody doing it to kashmir
More funny cover versions, anything by Dread zeppelin, Elvis doing zeppelin
Bad News - Bohemian Rhapsody
I don't know if these count as cover versions per se but
Jimi Hendrix -Hey Joe (Bob Dylan) and I think all along the Watch Tower was a Dylan song too :)

Wasn't that done with Jimmy Page's input for the Godzilla soundtrack? I know what you mean, though - bloody Sugarbabes destroying Tubeway Army

Couldn't agree more, I 've heard several classic early 80's songs completely murdered in the last couple of years.
Apart from anything else it's just plain lazy, they can't even be arsed to write their own tunes anymore!

I have no idea, I just remember hearing it once, when David was driving me into work, I was fuming all day
willowroolz - September 4, 2004 11:47 AM (GMT)
And someone used the riff from Van Halen's Ain't Talking Bout Love, too. That one really pissed me off.
Persephone - September 4, 2004 11:59 AM (GMT)
somebody murdered Back In Black that way too, Bon Scott would be turning in his grave
btw Darris, loving the avi, Jerry Cantrell
Darris - September 4, 2004 02:21 PM (GMT)
Haha i never noticed the little drool smiiley before. Jerry is easy on the eyes. :)
Apparantly Tori Amos has covered Slayers Reign in Blood? Wouldn't it be cool to see her on top of the pops singing South of Heaven. ;)
It was Apollo 440 that used the Van Halen riff and then cheekily pinched the song title too and called it Aint Talkin' Bout Dub.
Bang Tango did quite a good cover of 20th Century Boy, and Xentrix did a fun rendition of the Ghostbuster theme.
Margot C - September 6, 2004 11:00 AM (GMT)
The funniest cover I've ever heard is The Libertines' version of My Heart Will Go On (Celine Dion). It's hilarious, I love it
Margot
Laura - September 6, 2004 11:10 AM (GMT)
Some quite funny covers are by 'Me First And The Gimme Gimmes'. They do punk rock versions of old pop songs. When Daryl Denham was still doing Drivetime on Virgin he played a few of them and they were very funny
Nick - September 6, 2004 11:17 AM (GMT)
Although I'm not a big fan of Travis, I thought their cover of Britney Spears' production team's 'Baby One More Time' on Jo Whileys' live lounge was hilarious
goth willow fan - September 6, 2004 11:50 AM (GMT)
There is a cover of Baby, One More Time by a group called The Faces of Sarah that actually makes it sound like a good song!

But is it as good as Darius' version on Pop Idol all those years ago!!! ;)
searching t'internet for this cover :)
Hippy - September 6, 2004 12:14 PM (GMT)
Am I allowed to count Weird Al's song versions as covers
If so Smells Like Nirvana was inspired :D
I guess I could also mention covers by The Wurzels or Rolf Harris but you'd all probably ignore me after that :ph43r: :nerd:

Do you mean Rolf Harris - Stairway To Heaven, Hippy? Class!
Nick - September 6, 2004 12:27 PM (GMT)
Once you get over the fact that someone's trying to cover Led Zep - I just find it incredibly hilarious :lmao:
Darris - September 7, 2004 03:44 PM (GMT)
Mr Bungles version of Hit Me Baby One More Time is quite funny.
Didn't Rolf play Glastonbury one year to a standing ovation?

All together now :-
"What is this song all about,
Can't figure any lyrics out,
How do the words to it go,
I wish you'd tell me I don't know"
 :P
Darris - September 7, 2004 04:13 PM (GMT)
The best thing Weird Al did was the parody of Michael Jackson's Beat it.
Don't you tell me you're full
Just eat it, eat it, eat it, eat it
Get yourself an egg and beat it
Have some more chicken, have some more pie
It doesn't matter if it's boiled or fried
Just eat it, eat it, just eat it, eat it
Just eat it, eat it, just eat it, eat it, ooh
Nick - September 7, 2004 04:17 PM (GMT)
tbh i've never heard 'smells like nirvana' but 'eat it' is a classic

Coincidently I heard this for the first time on the radio this morning. They played it as part of the breakfast show ramble.

The very worst cover has to be 'Under The Bridge' by All Saints. That truly is a disgrace. My personal fave cover is The Damned's version of 'Eloise' - the 12" single was brilliant.
Persephone - November 23, 2004 10:39 PM (GMT)
Another nomination for worst cover ever, had the misfortune of hearing AFI murdering Head Like A Hole while at w**k. How can they make it sound like a limp wristed boy band song, absolutely sacriligious

Agreed on both points. How could they let them do that, its not right.
I love the Damned's Eloise, you've got me singing it now. Then again I love the Damned. :D

Trust me, not a patch on the original ;)
It's not just me, a couple of the lads at w**k are big NIN fans too, we had quite the heated discussion last night

Just heard Fear Factory's version of Gary Numan's Cars - it's pretty good but it has to be said that is because they haven't changed much at all, and also Gary was involved in doing it anyway.
