Anyone recommend any good ones?

Crichton Kicks - August 23, 2004 05:02 PM (GMT)
Amazing Spiderman "Coming Home" by JMS

Rising Stars "Born in Fire" by JMS

The Sandman: "Preludes & Nocturnes" by Neil Gaiman

jamiearmour - August 24, 2004 08:53 PM (GMT)
Any books by Grant Morrison as well. A great comic book writer, well worth a look. (No I'm not just saying that 'cos I used to live 10 minutes away from him at all, he is really good.)

ken1701e - August 26, 2004 06:44 AM (GMT)
Will possibly go buy some next month, there are quite a few out there I fancy.

Ones I have already got:

DC ARCHIVES COLLECTION : BATMAN VOL 1

THE GREATEST SUPERMAN STORIES EVER TOLD

THE BEST OF STAR TREK

THE BEST OF STAR TREK THE NEXT GENERATION

UNDERWORLD

THE LEAGUE OF EXTRODINARY GENTLEMEN VOL 1

not many for someone who used to be the biggest comic fan like I was!!

ken1701e - September 10, 2004 11:37 PM (GMT)

Crichton Kicks - September 11, 2004 12:22 AM (GMT)

Just ordered

THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN vol 2 from AMAZON !!!

When I was in 'Another World' yesterday, they had both volumes of TLOXG.

Preacher Volume 4 will be next on my list, but not until after payday I don't think

ken1701e - September 12, 2004 09:26 PM (GMT)
After seeing HELLBOY tonight I have ordered one of the HELLBOY books from AMAZON to see what the original material is actually like!!

jamiearmour - September 13, 2004 06:13 PM (GMT)
Good call Ken. If you enjoyed the movie (as I did btw) you will love the original series. The movie is amazingly true to the source material (making it a rarity in hollywood today).

To all the nay sayers who decry the movie I say :guns: :guns: :P

Which ones have you got?

ken1701e - September 25, 2004 07:32 AM (GMT)
was there ever a B5 comic book?

Crichton Kicks - September 25, 2004 11:41 AM (GMT)
Yep, there were a few as I recall. I know there's at least one TP, I've got it somewhere, although I wouldn't recommend it, it's highly spoilerish at this point. That goes for the majority of the novels as well ;)

Havent seen any of the novels anyway but thanks for the warning.

Got tons to read at the moment anyway and still about 4 more books to arrive sometime next month from AMAZON before the new STAR TREK NEW FRONTIER that I have preordered arrives in NOVEMBER.

There have been 2 Babylon 5 comic series. The first lasted for 13 issues until it was cancelled by DC (owned by Time Warner, go figure!!) It was co-written by JMS himself. All 13 issues are reprinted in 2 trade paperbacks. Well worth hunting down (and not too spoilerish as they are set during season 1)

The second series was a 3 issue mini series written by Peter David (does that guy sleep??) It would be far too spoilery for me to tell you who stars in it and what they get up to. Maybe after you've seen season 3 I could go into more detail ;)

Isn't one of the TPs titled In *****'* Name ?? ;)

I'd stay away from that one until the third season for sure

Is the David one set on Mars ?? (can't remember offhand). Again that's another one to avoid for now.

jamiearmour - September 25, 2004 09:46 PM (GMT)
;) No the Peter David one is the story entitled "In *****'s name" and it is set aboard what is left of a "1000 year old space station" hint hint. ;)

The first two trades are set within season 1 of the show and should therefore be mostly harmless for newbies to read :D

Crichton Kicks - September 25, 2004 10:54 PM (GMT)
I really should get around to re-reading that one at least :)

Think it's at Mum and Dad's somewhere though

She wouldn't dare. I'll take a look for it the next time I'm down there. Last time I went digging I found X-Men Onslaught Volume 1.

ken1701e - September 26, 2004 09:20 AM (GMT)
gone from having only a few of these to a nice little collection in the last month. Two more today (see What you last bought thread!!)

I am sure your mum wouldnt throw anything away without asking you first would she?

No, she's quite good like that. Thank God :)

I've still got a couple of volumes of Preacher to get through. Started volume 2, Until The End of the World last night. I'd forgotten just how brilliant that one was.

jamiearmour - September 26, 2004 01:22 PM (GMT)
The Invisibles, and Transmetropolitan are also well worth the read. ;)

ken1701e - October 9, 2004 04:48 PM (GMT)
Has anyone read the books STAN LEE's BATMAN or STAN LEE's SUPERMAN
and if so are they any good?

Crichton Kicks - October 9, 2004 05:22 PM (GMT)
Haven't read either of those, but how does that work Ken ?? Aren't Batman and Superman both DC properties ?? Was Stan moonlighting ??

Incidentally have you seen that the Japanese are producing a Manga version of Star Trek ??

Just saw the two books on Amazon today. I guess it was a special that STAN LEE did with DC's blessing.

As for Japanesse star trek I heard a rumour somewhere do you know any details?

Crichton Kicks - October 9, 2004 07:25 PM (GMT)
Only the details that Trektoday released. I've placed a quoted post in the general Trek forum.

It was a bit of a coup for DC, getting Marvel's head honcho to re-imagine their biggest characters as though he had created them originally (basically a marvel style take of the characters). The books all read like Marvel "What if?" books.

I own the Wonder Woman book, which is "interesting" but only read it once.

They let him loose on all the big properties, Green Lantern, Flash, Batman, Superman, JLA, Wonderwoman, but all of them were very cliche and had Stan Lee's typical writing style all over them.

Crichton Kicks - October 10, 2004 09:47 AM (GMT)
The X-Men aside, I've always preferred DC over Marvel anyway.

So what did you think of Joss Whedons recent ressurection of Colossus? it was sneaky how he made us think he was bringing Jean back (again! Is it just me who feels that is sooo passe now). He has gotten off to a great start with the book.

Crichton Kicks - October 10, 2004 10:11 AM (GMT)
Haven't checked out X-Men since Whedon's been over there Jamie. Sad to sy, I haven't had the time

jamiearmour - October 10, 2004 06:38 PM (GMT)
I would make the time if i were you. The book is lining up to be amazing. Sorry if I spoiled the surprise for you re the resurrection :( It is still worth reading regardless. Joss seems to have a good understanding of the characters and their motivations. The reappearance of Kitty Pryde and Lockheed the dragon (hardly my favourite characters ever) is turning out to be a genius move on his part also.

Go read it now.

Yes, i mean now!!!

Crichton Kicks - October 10, 2004 07:48 PM (GMT)
So little time, too many things to watch/read.

It's stored away for future acquisition. I'll pick up the TPBs as they come out ;)

Will let you know what I think to them when they arrive.

Looking forward to STRANGE issue 2 later this month.

So you managed to track down issue 1 then?

It's obvious that JMS has a real passion for the character (his appearances in JMS's spidey run really told me that) But as always a firm, but clear handle on storytelling. The pacing was fabulous and the art just felt right somehow.

I can't wait for issue 2 myself :D

Yes, got it from SHEFFIELD SPACE CENTRE, going to go straight there for issue 2 and beyond, not bothering looking elsewhere.
