Parents: Mike and Sharon Ross
Siblings: none
Children: none

History: The only child of Sharon and Mike, Abby was born in the downtown Miami area. After she was born, the family moved to New York, where her father opened a chain of restaurants. Business was booming, and Abby enjoyed every luxury of being an only child in a well-off family. Shortly after her High School graduation, Abby's father died in a car crash, and the running of the family business fell on her shoulders.

For 4 years, Abby ran her family's 12 restaurants all over New York state, and went to college full time, all while taking care of her mother who seemingly had a nervous breakdown after her husband's death. Little did Abby know, but there was a whole lot more going on when it came to her father's death and her mother's drastically diminishing mental state. Abby graduated Queen's College with top honors, double majoring in Business Management and Music Studies.

For about a year, things went smoothly. Well, as smoothly as they could go for a very busy woman running a large business and taking care of her mentally ill mother. For about a year, things were ok. For about a year, Abby was happy in her continued ignorance about what had really happened between her father and her mother. That all was about to change. Abby's mother had a half an hour every evening by herself after the home health nurse left, just until Abby got home.

The entire house was dark that night. Dropping her thing on the kitchen counter, as always, Abby headed upstairs to look for her mother. The only light on in the house was coming from her bedroom. So, Abby opened the door and stepped in, almost falling back on her ass when she saw her mother with a knife in her hands, and what looked like her father standing over her. He was telling her to go ahead and slice herself up, that she deserved it for what she had done to him. When he turned to Abby, a sick grin crept across his face. He turned back to Abby's mother, muttering a few words in Latin. Her mother's eyes cleared, then she looked over at her only daughter. Her sobbing came harder, somehow, she had some kind of clarity. The next thing Abby new, her mother had thrown a circle around her. Slowly, she stood and walked over. Through her tears she told Abby something that chilled her heart, something she never would have believed had it not come from her own mother's lips.

That night, her mother told her that she was responsible for her father's death, and that the one in the room, looking like him, was actually a demon. Apparently, Abby's father had come to her the night that he died, and told her that he was leaving her. After fighting about it, Abby's dad left to take care of a problem at one of the restaurants. That's when her mom summoned the demon. She had apparently left her demands too vague, asking only that Abby's dad pay for what he had done to her. She had also never agreed on a payment for all of this. So, the demon did as she asked, making Abby's father pay with his life. He then proceeded to return to Sharon, slowly driving her insane by appearing as her now dead husband.
After telling her daughter all of this, Sharon turned back to the demon, offering her years of mental torture and her life as payment for what he had done for her. The demon agreed, and watched, waiting for her to fulfill her end of the bargain. Abby stood there, in that circle, a coldness creeping over her, and watched as her mother slit her wrists. She didn't say anything to her, nor did her mother ask for my forgiveness. The two women simply stared at one another, still and silent, as the life drained from one of them.

The circle fell as Abby's mother took her last breath, and the demon turned to his eyes to the only one left of the Ross family. Quickly creating her own circle, Abby stared at this demon with her father's face. The demon, Aliagarept, kept circling, searching for a weak spot. Not finding one, he elected to stand there, taunting Abby. Abby's voice was calm, telling him to leave, that he had received his payment and to get the hell out of her house. He didn't move, preferring to stand there, staring. They must have stayed that way for hours, staring at each other. Finally, the first rays of the sun pierced through the windows, and he disappeared. Needless to say, Abby couldn't stay there any longer. She called 911, reporting her mother's suicide. As soon as they left with her, Abby grabbed a few clothes and headed out to a hotel. She stayed there for a few weeks, while the restaurants sold and someone bought the brownstone that she had grown up in. Abby bounced around from one friend's house to another, trying to decide just what she wanted to do with herself now.

She moved to Miami for a fresh start, back in the place she started her life. No longer really needing to work, she decided to just live for a while. Abby bought a decent house downtown, and is now trying to find the joy in life she has lost grip of.

Writing Sample:

Abby pulled the last of her spelling supplies out of the box and placed them in the cabinet. She brushed the stray hairs that had fallen out of her pony tail out of her face.
She was now officially moved in. True, she had been in her new house for over a week now, but Abby was a firm believer that nothing was concrete until you unpacked the last box. Feeling accomplished, and rather hungry, Abby went to check her fridge to see what she could have for a late dinner. There might as well have been spiderwebs strewn throughout her refrigerator. Her quick stop at the grocery store earlier in the week had been apparently too quick.

Well, she thought to herself, let's see what kind of restaurants they have around here. She left the kitchen and headed into her office. With a flick of the mouse, the screensaver closed. Abby hopped online and headed for the restaurant section of the Miami Online Yellow Pages. With a flash, the word "pizza" caught her eye.

"Mmmmmmm," she mumbled as she thought of food. Grabbing the phone from the desk beside her, she dialed the number. A few minutes later, Abby flopped down onto the couch. It would be about a half hour before the food got there, and she really didn't have anything to do now that she was done unpacking. These were the times she dreaded over the past few months. These quiet times where if she sat still for too long her mind would start to wander back to things she would really rather not think about.
Rand bounded up onto the sofa, hopping up onto Abby's shoulder and nuzzling at her ear. It was as if the small animal knew that she needed a distraction just in that exact moment. A smile and small laugh fell from her as she pulled her ferret from his resting place and tickled at his stomach. That's what she could do. She could play with Rand and set up his bed and stuff in her bedroom. "Come on, buddy," she said to Rand, ruffling his soft fur as she stood and headed for the bedroom.
