Title: 55 salousi
yodahorn - October 12, 2007 01:59 AM (GMT)
what is the max # of saulosi u would put in a 55?
cichlidfinatic - October 12, 2007 03:02 PM (GMT)
IN a 55 gallon?
Well it all depends:
How big are they?
What the layout of the tank is like?
What kind of filtration you got going on there?
and what the water quallity is like in your tank
Barring in mind that saulosi will grow as all other fish will grow, maybe not as fast as other Mbunas but the point is they will exceed 3inches.
So putting that into consideration I wouldnt keep more thank 18 -20 Saulosi in a 55 gallon for life in the begining when they are Juvi's to colouringup/semi adult you can keep up to 35. You will need to cut this number back drastically once they grow.
Another think you need to consider is the Male/Female Ratio in the tank Aggression will come into play if u have more males over powering the number of females.
With Saulosi I like to keep 1 male per 4-5 females ratio.
Hope that helps

If this is a species only tank and you have really great filtration, lots of rockwork, I would say it would be safe to shoot for 30 long term.

I agree with Rob and Kim on this one!
Of course, you know that I can always help you out with
too many females, Yodahorn!
Are you getting ready to buy some additional Saulosi to
add to your existing stock?
yodahorn - October 13, 2007 01:07 AM (GMT)

I have over 25 in a 38 gallon tank right now. blinky I'm going to have to do something soon. I'd like to put 25 into my 55 gallon - I think that would be a good size for this number of fish.
I started out with only five, but they multiplied rapidly.
yodahorn - October 13, 2007 09:26 PM (GMT)
aura, what are you located?
Aura - October 14, 2007 12:14 AM (GMT)
I'm in a little town in western Washington, not too far from Olympia and Tacoma.
yodahorn - October 14, 2007 12:44 AM (GMT)
Aura, if you didn't live so far away, I'd buy a few of your extra saulosis. I'm sure shipping from Washington to Ky would be really expensive.

Hey Yodahorn!
Are you planning on buying some more Saulosi from
Bluegrass Cichlids?
How did your first group from Bluegrass turn out?
yodahorn - October 15, 2007 10:12 PM (GMT)
yes pb, but I need to get rid of some other fish first. my first batch of 10 became 8, with an very blue dominant male and 2 sub-dominants who are still yellow with the faded black stripes. So, I think I have 3 males and 5 females.
Aura - October 15, 2007 10:25 PM (GMT)
Yodahorn, it shouldn't take too long and you will have more than you know what to do with!
I started with five - two males and three females. That soon became one male and three females and very soon after that the females were holding. Now I have too many.

What size were they Aura when ur's started Breeding cuz mine are about 2inches right now I can 100 percent tell from a far now witch are males/females the males are starting there colouring up stage.
with the cute little bodies trying so hard to show off those deep blue colours :) for now its still yellow body with little black bars starting to form :P
Reason I asked about the size they started breeding at is because some have it going on earlier on..
can't wait!! Drooly
preacherboy - October 17, 2007 01:39 PM (GMT)
Mine started just as the male began to change his colors.
It didn't take but about a week or two for the male to finally finish
coloring up!
Aura - October 17, 2007 03:37 PM (GMT)
I'd say that mine were around the 2 inch mark, maybe a little less than that.
I'm sure it won't be too long, cichlidfinatic!
cichlidfinatic - October 17, 2007 10:10 PM (GMT)
ALRIGHT!!!! that means in a few weeks that HornDog male of mine is gonna start lurring those unsuspecting Females into his castle.!!!
Gimme an A!

Tank update:
After obtaining some zebra obliquedens, I decided to thin my numbers. I got rid of the 3 tiger barbs in my tank as well as 2 psuedotropheus acei tanzania black and 2 subdominant male saulosis. Now I have 6 saulosi (2m/4f); with the extra males gone the dominant male saulosi is already putting the moves on the female that held previously. He is shaking his rearend against her mouth, which makes me think that he might be fertilizing eggs? The other remaining male is already showing more blue and doing the same routine that the dom male is doing, when the dom male isn't looking.
What I have in the tank right now is:
6 saulosi (2m/4f)
4 acei (?)
3 zebra obliquedens (2m/1f)
5 ice blue zebra juvies
1 colbalt blue zebra male
1 eureka peacock
2 hap kenya gold juvies
1 featherfin cat fish
1 albino chocolate pleco
What I would like to do is get rid of all but the saulosi, acei, obiqs and pleco and add the 3 bn plecs that I growing out in a 5.5 gal right now when the get bigger (only little over an inch right now).
yodahorn - October 20, 2007 07:35 PM (GMT)
yep, that female is holding again! Wooo hoo!!
cichlidfinatic - October 20, 2007 11:24 PM (GMT)
My Other Female Ps Elongatus "yellow Tail" is holding now!! Freakin males are workin those females over time!!

Way to go, Yodahorn! Bouncy
I still want some of your female Saulosi, please! ohhh please ohh please
When they grow out, of course!
yodahorn - October 31, 2007 07:13 PM (GMT)
The next day that female appeared to no longer holding.
cichlidfinatic - October 31, 2007 08:51 PM (GMT)
She prolly swallowed. was it first time holding?
yodahorn - November 1, 2007 02:04 AM (GMT)
no her second, the blue zebra that I just got out of the tank was bad to chase her, so my mix is calming down.
yodahorn - November 18, 2007 08:40 PM (GMT)
look under the Lake Malawi forum thread "help me finalize my tank" to find pics of my 55 saulosi tank.
