Title: Temperature Yo-Yo: Preventive Measures?

Pseudospecialops - October 5, 2007 01:57 AM (GMT)

As mentioned elsewhere, I had a heater stick in the "on" position and try to cook one of my tanks this week. Because I followed Mongo's advice it was one of two underpowered heaters in the tank and thus I avoided a disaster.

But my schedule this week has been crazy, and I am only today getting a replacement heater. So my fish endured a week where their temp was as low as 74.5 (running on 1 heater) and as high as 86.5.

I know this stresses them -- any preventative measures to take to prevent downstream problems?

first off, Raise temp slowly. (a degree or two a day.)

Try to feed easily digested, (easy on the tummy) foods for the next few days.

Go ahead and add some additional salt to combat any Ich breakouts.

And most importantly....... Watch them closely !!!!

Good luck with them !!!! Good Job

Hands Down get a fully submersable Plastic pre-adjustable heater...

I find that metal/glass heaters release irregular heat flux's in my opintion
Im goign to asume u don't keep any of ur tanks near a Heating vent? or a window?
Now that might be a silly question but u'd be surprised as to how many people do it.

What type of heater do u have now? and have u ever experienced this type of issue before? Hmmmm

Forgive me I never read where u mentioned this before idunno

I have to check the brand name but it was glass. I replaced it with a submersible plastic one (Stealth I think) -- I enjoyed reading your post because I've now adopted a policy that these are all I'll use.

No major heat vents nearby. Not next to a window, though the tank gets a little early morning sun when it streams in horizontally for a few minutes.

Thanks for checking in on this!

I've been using this heater for a while now ever since it came out and I swere that I never check my thermostate..I set it and leave it.

Once in a blue moon ill check the Temp and its always at the same level :)

Its got a smart chip in it that Automatically turns it's self off when over heating occurs or when removed from water.

I have been using Visi-Therm heaters since I been in the hobby!

I really like the new Stealth heaters (although that did put that "red
knob" on the end of the heater to adjust the temp.)

Rob, I liked the looks of the heater you posted as well.

I like the automatic shutoff feature as well.

Thanks for sharing!
