Title: help?

bradley - October 4, 2007 01:21 AM (GMT)
Hey guys,
My albino peacock i brought in yesterday had some damage to its tail, presumably just from shipping. just overnight it got worse and i can still see some flesh of the tail that look like small threads. the whole outside has withered away. doesnt look infected or anything, just wondered why it got worse instead of better. thx

That's quite a bit of difference for just one day. Are you treating him with anything yet?

When I had this problem in the past (with no infection), I used some aquarium salt and melafix with good clean water to treat.

I hope it'll clear up for you and not get infected. He's a pretty fish.

No experience to help with, but just wanted to say I hope it goes well for you. He's a beautiful fish.

I agree with Aura and I might also add some Primafix with the Melafix.

You may need to consider using Maracyn 2 to prevent infection from
setting up. But I wouldn't use it until seeing if the about treatment will work.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Beautiful fish, BTW!

Brad, was he shipped? Or did you pick him up? How long was he bagged is what I'm really getting at!

I don't think it's serious yet, so I would try Melafix and water changes...Keep the water pristine. I think he'll be fine. If you see any cottony substance around the edges, go with a broad spectrum antibiotic and Pimafix. (Erythromycin would be my choice!)

he was shipped. probably in the bag for 20-24 hours. i just dosed the whole tank with aquarium salt, melafix and pima fix to how much the bottles said to.

Pseudospecialops - October 5, 2007 01:28 AM (GMT)

Don't tell Derek, but Pimafix has helped with nipped fins and several minor scrapes etc. my fish have had.

That should keep things under control, Brad.

If it worsens while you're doing this, try some erythromycin, but I'm sure the "fix" will turn things around.

not worse but not better...

bradley - October 8, 2007 06:56 PM (GMT)
im gonna do another water change tonight and redose with mela/pimafix and salts.. hopefully that helps

Kim - October 8, 2007 08:08 PM (GMT)
If you have time to do daily water changes and dose with the meds, that might speed things along for you. I don't know what it is about water changes but they can really turn things around.

That's really not true, Rob.

Anytime there are external issues with a fish water changes and substrate vacuuming is beneficial. In the off chance that it is an external parasite or fungus, it can be life saving. And, it saves us from medicating a tank unnecessarily many times.
