Title: Bloat or not?

cichlidfinatic - October 2, 2007 01:42 AM (GMT)
I just got a bunch of saulosi juvis about 2inches almost 2.5 and all of them seem to have a slightly bloated belly some more than others.

They eat normally, they don't hang out at the bottom of the tank, and there feces is still brown normal

But i've kept saulosi before from fry to adult and i've never seen this before
ill try and get some photo's up but i think it will be to hard to tell that way...

Any thoughts? perhaps another parasite other than Bloat??

Feeding: NLS pellets, Spirulina, Omega 1 flakes

I don't wanna go through the proccess of given them a salt water bath...or using any commercial meds

When did you get these fish?Perhalps thiey are just overfed from the previous owner.A little salt in the tank never urts as it adds electrolitesto the water and aids with ailing fish.I always add a little everytime I do a WC

I got this new batch over the weekend.

Im gonna keep a close eye on them over the next few days, there behavior is pretty erratic and im not sure if im liking it.

I use aquarium salt im cichlid tanks as well, about 1table spoon per 5 Us gallons

and a but after WC as well... Hope everything works out okay don't wanna loose those little buggers

I agree with Derek, Rob!

It wouldn't hurt to maybe fast these fish a couple of days
and watch them to see if any improvements occur.

Or, you can feed them very lightly for the next couple of days
and see what happens!

Just stay on top of the situation. Bloat is much more easily cured
if it is caught in its early stages!

I would add epsom salt rather than aquarium salt. It has a laxative quality, and can be helpful preventatively with bloat. You adminster it at 1 cup per 100G of water.

Also, be careful with the NLS (or any pellet) if that is NOT what they are used to eating. If they've been raised on flake food prior to you getting them, then you need to slowly wean them over to a pellet.

NLS is very concentrated, and it's easy to overfeed and easy for the fish to gorge themselves upon.

I won't use any kind of pellets for this very reason.

Thanks kim for the tip

Sorry I didnt respond sooner sorta lost track of this post >>>

I've been fasting the guys for a few days, there bloaty tummy's seemed to be less and less bloated and they are still very much lively and wanting food. Tomarrow I will slowly give them food and feed them just once a day for a bit then more often and at this stage view them extra closely...

Thanks again
