Title: Pseudotropheus flavus

Aura - September 30, 2007 03:59 AM (GMT)
Here are a few pictures of my flavus. I started out with one male and two females about a year and a half ago, and now have about 20 of them plus 7 brand new fry. Good Job The original three were so prolific that I stopped saving fry for a long time.

I have a pretty good number of males coloring up and will be moving some of them into my 60 gallon and with the others in a 75 gallon soon. They have been growing out in a 29 gallon and I've left them in there too long. There are three colored males running the show.

I've found my males to be pretty aggressive with each other and think they need to be in at least a four foot tank even though they are a "dwarf" mbuna.

Anyone else keep these or have any pictures to share?

My only dwarves are Lab. Mbamba (though I guess some people call Yellow Labs dwarves).

Love these photos and fish!

Nice pics Aura, yes I have been breeding a wild colony here since 2002,,,same group,,,although they are starting to slow down now.
I have raised and sold probably over one thousand fry from this group!
I'm not really sure that this would be considered a "dwarf" species as it grows to about 10 cm for males (almost 5 inches)

OH MY GOD THEY ARE AWSOME LOOKING!!!

Aura, those flavus aresome of the best I have seen...EVER! All the ones I see around here have a muddy/dirty yellow and the background color is very light brown...nothing like yours. Congrats on some awsome looking fish.

Mongo, you might be seeing all females! They can look as you are describing, but in the blink of an eye they can colour up almost as nice as the males!

Gorgeous pics, Aura! I really love the flavus and would like to keep them again someday! The males are absolutely stunning!

nice looking flavus there, how big is he?

Thanks everybody! I wish I were better at taking pictures so you could really see their color. The flash on my point and shoot washes them out.

I have at least a half dozen males right now varying in size. The one in the top picture is about 2.5 inches and the others are around the 2 inch mark and there are some smaller ones that don't want to show their colors yet. I've seen them labeled as a dwarf species in some of the profiles that I've looked at, but 5 inches is a bit large. Hmmmm

Mongo, there are times when some of mine will look kind of muddy like you described. Sometimes you can barely make out any barring and other times they are just glowing brilliant yellow and black. Females can be tricky and change appearance as well.

I'll look through some more of my pics and see if I can find some other examples to post.

Here are a couple of young/subdom males. They look like they have potential, but don't want to show it.

Mongo, you never know, those muddy looking ones that you've seen might surprise you when you get them into a nice new home.
