Title: Rocks siliconed to inside of glass
Description: real rocks as a background

Can light weight flat rocks be siliconed to the inside back of a 72 gal bow-front? It would be about 25-30 lbs of rock. I.d like to just cover the top half of the back inside glass. It would be an area of about 13 x 46 inches. About 1.5 lb per 6inch square x 16 = 24lbs I would leave space around each rock for fish and fry to hide in. The outside back would be either painted flat black or covered with a black plastic. Has anyone ever tried this? Is that too much weight for the glass?

I have never tried this but it would depend on the thickness of glass and how much your willing to gamble your floor if your wrong!

There are better ways IMHO like strofoam and epoxy paints in a do it yourself or you can go to LFS and buy the foam rocks pre done

Good luck and if you do please post us up some pics in the DIY area

Boy, is that an interesting thought. Wish I were one of those physics types who could figure out how that weight changes the stresses on the glass.

Where would we find an expert who could answer this?

I have read of this being done before. I thought about trying it on a 10 gallon tank just to see how it turned out. I think I'd be afraid to do something that permanent on a nice, expensive tank.

Here's a bit of info on doing the background for a paludarium for an idea of how to get started. You'd probably have to make some adjustments to do it in an aquarium.

I wish I knew the answer to the weight question.
