Title: Little ones...

Kim - August 31, 2007 03:36 PM (GMT)
We've got so many little ones growing out all over the place. An amazing amount of fry are surviving in the main tanks, and are being totally ignored by the adults.

Just thought I'd share some pics...

This is in one of our 55G, and makes for a very interesting tank...Minos Reef estherae, Cynotilapia White Tops, and Mbamba Mphanga Rocks...

What I think is a tiny 1/2 inch zebra Long Pelvic utilizing that spaghetti rock to the fullest! (Might be a White top, I'll have to wait and see!)

Little White tops not quite ready to join the chaos of the main tank...

If only we could figure out how to get them into the US!!!!

I have my new 55G in hand, and I'll be ordering my 180G for my birthday.

Your tank looks so sparkling clean! :D Beautiful babies, and I'm still looking for that spaghetti rock. You'd think an aquatic company would see the need for a rock like this and jump on the opportunity to produce and sell it.

Don, you must be so excited! I would love to have the space for a 180G! And the potential for the fish it would hold!

Kelly, Pete keeps the tanks clean, I can't take any credit for it at all! He does water changes while I clean and do laundry on the weekends!

Once they move beyond "bite sized morsels", I'm not overly concerned about mixing them up. We've started taking a few of each species, moving them in with their parents once they reach an inch. They seem to grow faster in the main tanks, and they really increase the activity level in the tanks, since some of the adults can be skittish at times, and the babies serve as "dither" fish and keep everyone out in the open.

Of course, it's important that we have more than adequate filtration on the tanks, but I've also found that our aggression levels seem to decrease somewhat having the little guys in with the big guys.

You can overstock with your own fish and not have to buy more, grow them out quicker, and watch the interaction of the larger groups.

And maybe you can ship some to the eastcoast too? Now this should be good!

Gladly, Dave. I know the White tops will be coming down with us for sure.

I really wish we could figure out a way to get some of them in to you guys now...We have so many juvies growing out, and we aren't very motivated at getting rid of them anymore, so they just sit there, taking up tank space and eating our food! I've been throwing some of the more dominant ones back in the main tanks just to watch their interaction with the adults!

If any of you know anyone who lives near Buffalo, NY, we are only about 1/2 hour from there. If you could just get them driven through customs and back on the US side, they could box them up and start shipping. (I'm pretty sure they could get through Homeland Security - just not sure they would get through fast enough if shipped from Canada, and the shipping costs FROM here would be like the national debt!) I would give you all the fish, so all you would have to do is pay shipping costs!

Sigh. We used to go there regularly when our son was in college in upstate New York. But he graduated two years ago.

My great grandfather was born just across the Falls from Canada on the US side, and his father is buried there. But we're only acquaintances with the distant cousins who live there now.

One of these days...

Very nice guys...they look great! I do the same with mixed ages and sizes...tends to keep down the aggression actually!
