Title: Aulonacara Huseri
Description: "White Top Peacock"

Kim - August 29, 2007 10:26 PM (GMT)
Well, I went to see Larry today, looking for some extra colour for my "calm" mbuna tank, and we came home with a trio of these guys...They're still in QT, but I thought they were gorgeous, some of Larry's private stock.

We swore off peacocks when we realized how long it took them to grow out, but a girl can always change her mind!

One of the females has one cloudy eye, and the male has a slight cloud in the center of one eye, but I'm sure it's from transporting them in the heat today - the AC is out on the car and this heat and humidity feels more like Kentucky than Ontario!

We'll probably raise one clutch of them and then allow the rest to be released in the main tank. They are going in with a passive group of black acei, johanni and trewavasae...I hope they stay passive!

Beautiful fish!!!

Kim - August 30, 2007 01:52 PM (GMT)
Thanks, Don...They look even nicer now that they've settled in, and the cloudy eye is all gone. I've always worried about transporting fish in the winter here, and never really given the summer transports much thought until this time. Larry even packed them in a nice cooler for us, and it took less than an hour to get them home, well, if you don't count the time we spent talking to Larry in the parking lot!

Nice! Drooly

I know what you mean about waiting for them to color up. I have a couple of what I hope are males ohhh please ohh please that I bought about a year ago as little things and I'm still waiting!! After all of this time, I'll really be upset to find out they aren't males at all.

preacherboy - August 30, 2007 02:25 PM (GMT)
Nice acquisition, Kim! the Clap

You are spoiled living that close to so many
great cichlid hobbyist in your area! Nanananaa Nanananaa

I am truly green with envy, but I'm happy for you! blinky blinky

Kim - August 30, 2007 03:04 PM (GMT)
Aura, I've never seen anything grow out so slowly in all my fish keeping! I am just far too impatient to grow them out. But Larry wants some of these back, so I'll try it once!

That's the really great thing about living so close to cichlid enthusiast, preacherboy...If you get tired of keeping something, you've probably well populated the area with them so if you change your mind, you can always get them back.

I'll try to snap some more pics of this guy today now that he's settled in the QT. And hopefully, Klaus will snap some really good pics when we have the BBQ! I'm going to make him sing for those smoked ribs!

Oh Kim, they look gorgeous! I wondered when you'd acquire another peacock! Heehee

Kim - August 30, 2007 11:16 PM (GMT)
Well, it's all Larry's fault, you know!

Between him and Klaus and all their fish, I might as well just seal the windows on the apartment and fill it up!

We moved a piece of spaghetti rock into the QT today with them, and the male has discovered that the spaghetti rock is full of fry, so it's impossible to get another decent shot of him because he's too busy trying to eat all those babies!

Ya,that should keep his mind off being aggressive on the girls!
Hey,do you have pics of "spaggetti rock",,,I'm wondering if we call it some thing else???

Have fun with those new fish!

Cheers!!! Larry

Larry, the cloudy eye cleared up within a couple of hours. I think it was a combination of being transported and moved twice in one day! They are fine, now, all 3 look great, and I'm quite impressed with the females - they have a reddish sheen to them that is quite nice for a female peacock. (Please tell me this does not mean they are males... idunno ) Really, I don't care if they are, the males are so nice, I'll just spread them around a bit...

Here is a pic of the "spaghetti rock"...

I've never seen any just like it at your store. The holes in it go very deep into the rock, and it is a haven for fry. It has to be rinsed and soaked before putting it in your tanks, there is alot of "fallout" from it, a powdery substance that would mess up a tank if you didn't clean it right. We got it at a Super Pet close out sale, huge pieces for $4 each!

The peacocks are in QT until I decide what to do with them - my "peaceful" tank isn't so "peaceful" right now, but we moved some rock around and I wound up placing one piece of the spaghetti rock in there with them. The holes in the rock are so deep that you can't possibly shake out all the fry, so you tend to transfer them as well. Now all 3 peacocks are standing guard, trying to catch the little guys, and it is hilarious to watch them dart out for food...The huseri can't decide whether my flake looks better or my baby White tops!

very nice fish Kim! Makes me regret not getting some wheen my LFS had some juvies but I decided I didn't want to look at alot of brown fish.

Kim - September 8, 2007 01:33 PM (GMT)
I know what you mean about the brown fish...That is the main reason I got rid of all those peacocks we had before, and I was far too impatient to wait for the fry to grow out!

These females look much better than the BiColour females we had, though. They have a reddish sheen to them rather than being completely dull. I really need to try to get some more pics of them, but they are a little camera shy, and getting ready to spawn, so I've been trying to leave them alone.

I've found my Malieri Isls to have a tinge of yellow in their fins. my lwandas are a little silvery tinge over the brown but the red shoulders are a butt ugly brown.

Pseudospecialops - September 12, 2007 06:28 AM (GMT)
My Peacocks tank has the same slow gro issue. And I may have misidentified my Cop. Azureus, because they're slow too!

Nope, they are girls for sure, different species, different looking girls.
Only had 3 boys, wish I had more, that's why they had to go out as trios.
Actually I had every female in the tank holding a spawn before the Syno.multipunctatus went in.
I figured with the fish going crazy breeding that I'd be sure to get some multi's,but they just interferred so much with breeding that the Huseri just stopped.
SO,I think, since they are by themselves,it won't be to long before they start breeding again!

Nice pics,,,,they are a lot slower than mbuna! On the Floor Laughing

I think one of the females is just about ready to spawn right now. Seems it always takes them time to adjust when they are moved. They are still in a tank alone, I haven't got all of the more aggressive fish out of the larger tank yet so I can move them.

They are a really nice trio and I'm pleased with them!

Congrats on the new peacocks Kim...those guys look awsome. I cant wait to see some pics when the male gets his full color going. Another species with nice looking females is Alunocara jacobfreibergi. They will get a nice yellow sheen also.

Kim - September 18, 2007 12:32 PM (GMT)
Mongo, he's really showing out right now...Both females have dropped tubes, so he doesn't know who to spazz out in front of first! If I'm lucky, I can sweet talk Klaus or Larry into getting some good shots of him this weekend! ohhh please ohh please

He is a beauty, and I'm really impressed with his girls. They are quite nice for female peacocks!

Now, Larry, keep in mind that I don't have any tanks large enough for you to try underwater pics in! Nanananaa

You'll have to do it from the outside like a normal person!

When you guys get to Kentucky, we need to do a tarde. You drive half way and I'll drive the other half. I'm sure I can dredge something up from the dpeths of one of my tanks to get a few of those beautiful fish.

Kim - September 20, 2007 08:02 PM (GMT)
Sounds like a plan to me, Mongo! Maybe preacherboy will make the trip with us!

Kim

Mongo - September 20, 2007 08:17 PM (GMT)

cichlidfinatic - September 21, 2007 01:38 AM (GMT)
Nanananaa that was a good movie ;)

Pseudospecialops - September 21, 2007 05:34 AM (GMT)
Hmmmm... if I did the same thing from California, how far would I have to drive? (a REALLY long way!!!)

Seriously, I keep toying with the idea of adding a day to my Montreal trip in November and driving down to Ontario to say hello.

Kim - September 21, 2007 12:40 PM (GMT)
Don, if you can work it out and let me know ahead of time, we'll give you a good Ontario welcome with a little southern spice thrown in!

Kim
