Title: How much salt to add to your tank?
preacherboy - August 28, 2007 06:46 PM (GMT)
What is the general rule of thumb when it comes to
adding salt to your aquarium? Hmmmm
I already know that it is 1 cup of salt per 100 gallons.
But my tank is a 20 gal tank, which means there is about
15 gallons of water in the tank after substrate and rocks.
How many tablespoons/gallon is the general amount? Hmmmm
Thanks in advance for your replies! Help!

Well PB, that question is not that easy to answer because everybody seems to have it's own preference. The unwritten rule says to add 2 TABLE spoons per 10 gallon for regular maintenance.
I only use sea salt when I get a new group of wild fish and start them of with 5 TABLE spoons per 10 gallon which I reduce over time to no salt at all.
Sea salt is also my main medicine. Whenever I see that my fish are not behaving normal like reduced appetite or just sitting in one corner, I add 2-3 TABLE spoons per 10 gallon and raise the temperature another 3-4 degrees.
Ok, that is what I do. Now let's hear what other do. Now this should be good! Now this should be good!

Everyone is going to answer differently on this.
I do pretty much as Klaus has said.
I don't run salt in my tanks regularly. I used to when I had driftwood in some tanks in a concoction of baking soda, salt and epsom salt as a buffer, but my ph is good and I don't worry about it anymore.
Medicinally speaking, I've never had great results with the heat and salt method, but preventatively I think it's great.

Always one of my favorite topics
To me you have to know what you are starting with as far as your water parameters and where you want to go. For me my tap water is very soft with absolutely no burrering capacity whatsoever. My formula is 1TBS of epsom salt 1 TSP of canning salt to dirty up the water and 1 TSP of Baking Soda to buffer the ph to 8.4 per 5g of H2O. This gives me and end result of a GH of 15 and a KH of 10 and a ph of 8.4 .

Thanks everyone for the replies!
After the initial posted replies, I went with 1 TBS per 5 gallons.
I also opted for Epsom Salt!
It seems to have helped my fish somewhat with their digestion!
I know others would argue against adding salt as a preventative measure,
but I believe I will go this route for a while and see what happens.
