Title: Metriaclima greshakei - albino

Aura - August 12, 2007 07:49 PM (GMT)
The albino version of M. greshakei. The males are white with orange on the dorsal and tail fins. The females are more of a light orange color all over.

I wonder if the female's color is normal? It's hard to find any pictures of them for comparison.

This color difference makes it pretty easy to tell male from female at an early age.

Awesome fish, Aura!

I sure would like to have some of these fish!

They are just stunning! Drooly Drooly

BTW, I would like to congratulate you on

Thanks preacherboy and congrats to you as well. Good Job

I have a whole bunch of these little guys and if I knew anything about shipping fish, I'd be happy to give you some. Of course, with temps the way they've been out your way, I wouldn't be surprised if they were cooked when they arrived.

They look really great, Aura! I see alot of these around here, but only in Petsmart, and if it's any help, they all look identical to yours!

A regular male greshakei was the first fish to give Pete and I our initial lesson in mbuna aggression! At 3 inches, he totally terrorized our tank and we were clueless as to what his problem was!

I think the males are just spectacular, and there are few albinos that I like, but these are definitely one of them!

Any pics of the little ones at various stages of growth?

Pretty little guys that's for sure!

I'll see if I can get some decent images of mine.

But mine have NO yellow/orange tops, they are 100% white.

They DO however have a Faint orange sheen to them that appears to come and go based on their stress level, with stress=orange.

Here are a few that I could find of earlier stages.

These were newly stripped.

These were a little too early.

I'm not sure of the age of these, but they were still in the small size breeder box, so they were young.

Pseudo, do you ever see any light barring on them?

Pseudospecialops - August 16, 2007 04:38 AM (GMT)
On my Albino Socolofi fry, definitely there is visible barring. But not on the adults. The Greshakei have not bred. My guess is that I have 2 females.

Photos of mine are below. And maybe what I'll learn from all this is that they are not Greshakei after all, but some other Metriaclima or Ps. albino!

The female Lab. Mbamba appears to distrust her tank-mate, and feels she needs to keep an eye on her!

"Yawning" behavior; there was a large Acei just out of frame to the left.

Finally, a badly overexposed shot, but it shows the presumed Greshakei leading and the albino Socolofi following, and the one decent thing about the shot is that you can compare the profiles of their heads:

This time it's a male Lab. Mbamba keeping an eye on things in the background.

So, are those in fact Greshakei or something else???

I don't believe that you have an albino greshaki. I can see why the thought of greshaki though. They do have the same head shape.

Although looking at the 2 different pictures in this link the head shapes look extremely different to me, so it could be quite possible for the both of them to be albino socolofi. Any other comments?

Sorry to highjack Aura! Your male is so beautiful, you make me miss mine!! worry wart!

Shame on you! :D

Hijacking is never a problem for me. Sometimes topics go off in a certain direction, and that's fine - I don't even think of it as hijacking. Good Job

Pseudo, I can also see why the confusion with your fish. If it was a greshakei, I would expect to see some orange on it. And the head doesn't look right for a socolofi.

Hopefully, someone with a little more knowledge will take a look and help us out!

Is it possible these are just albino estheraes???

It has the zebra face. And the body doesn't seem quite "socolofi like"...

I used to have one just like it, one of the meanest crankiest fish I've ever kept, and he was huge.

Since Don sees a orange sheen at times, I'm voting albino estherae.

I don't think it's a greshakei.
