Title: Melafix and Pimafix with Holding Female

Pseudospecialops - June 19, 2007 07:55 PM (GMT)
I think that I read elsewhere that if I'm seeing some scrapes on the sides of my fish I can use Melafix and/or Pimafix in my tank without harming the eggs/fry of a holding female. Same for adding salt.

This worked well for me in the fast, but no one in the tank was holding at the time.

Is a full dosage as on the labels OK?

Any guidelines on how much salt I can add? Do I need to phase it in or just add it all at once?

Thanks, Kim!

I have used Melafix in tanks with holding females in the past, without any problem. I didn't lose the fry, but they were still in mom's mouth.

The only concern I have with it is that I've known of a few people who have used it in fry tanks and lost the fry, so it's a bit confusing. I believe this happened to cowchick once, if I'm not mistaken, and I have spoken with others who treated fry tanks for tattered fins and swear that the Melafix caused them to lose the fry.

Since salt works just as well to aid in healing wounds, and you have a holding mom, I think I would just go with the salt to be on the safe side.

Interesting about the fry but I have never seen this happen personally.I use Melafix in all my tanks when needed .

Derek, I use it when needed, too...(Actually, I've never used Pimafix. IMO, if you've got fungus, or even think you have fungus, you need to bring out the big guns and not monkey around with preventatives. But I do use Melafix because of it's healing properties!)

I recently used it on a tank full of Cyno Mbamba babies, but they were close to an inch. I had alot of tattered fins and just wanted it as a preventative.

But I believe Steph (cowchick) was one who lost a group of fry when using Melafix, if I'm not mistaken.
