Title: Food questions
bradley - July 23, 2007 09:14 PM (GMT)
Hey guys/gals,
I was wondering if you had any feedback on your experiences of food. I do not know too much about their food so i could use some help.
I was wondering can i fish bloat off flake.I have never seen it occur? I have fed my wild petrochromis 6 times a day on very large moderations of veggie and spirulina flakes and never had one bloat yet.
What is the best type of food to fatten up a fish with a sunken in stomach and on what moderations. I have a couple of older fish and wild caught fish that have sunken bellies, mainly peacocks.
Thanks
Brad

I would think that any good quality food would be acceptable in fattening up skinny fish, but the sunken stomach could also be a problem other than not enough to eat.
I had a fish with that condition a while back that ate like a pig, but only got worse as time went on. I tried treating him for internal parasites, but that didn't seem to help either. He lived like that for a long, long time, getting skinnier and skinnier and eventually died.
I'm not sure if any certain types of food will actually cause bloat. I think there needs to be some other contributing factors, but I have very little experience with bloat. Maybe Kim can help with this; I know she has helped a lot of people with bloat questions.

Because the consentration of nutrition in flake (not necessarily quality of nutrition) is not quite as high as in pellets, i would think that feeding pellets would help a hungry fish showing sunken belly quicker than flake. However, if the flake is not making a noticable difference I would worry that there is something more serious going on like a parasite. HTH

My Lab. Hongi pair arrived in my possession with severely sunken bellies. (My avatar is the M half way through recovery).
It probably took two months for them to fill out properly, so no perceived change after a week doesn't necessarily mean anything. It takes longer than one would think.
BTW, they spawned last month, about 3 months after I got them. :D

Congrats on your successful spawn, Don!
Glad to hear their bellies filled out again, too!
