Title: Spaghetti rock and mystery fry revealed!

Kim - July 15, 2007 04:09 PM (GMT)
I was sitting in front of the tank last night trying to get some decent shots of the adults.

This big piece of spaghetti rock is in the center, and it has two holes bored through it. I had noticed that one of my Synos was hanging out in one hole, and the goby was hanging out in the other, and I found that strange...Right up until I noticed there were fry living in almost every hole in the spaghetti rock!

You can see a darker one in the hole midway up on the left, and another lighter one right underneath the rock in front of it. I'm pretty sure these are zebra long pelvics, now!

If we had these kind of rocks in all our tanks, there would never be any need to remove holding moms! We could just raise the fry right in the tank.

Everytime you feed, you can see fry coming out of every crevice to eat!

Pete and I were watching the tank last night, and they are everywhere. We've come to the conclusion that someone was holding and we missed it! There are far too many fry for us to have returned mom with a few in her mouth.

It's always interesting to see how they survive, but I find it really stressful to watch the tank, just in case someone gets eaten while I'm watching!

I remember one night a tiny one darted up out of the rocks and I said "Oh, look at that" and Elvis Sr. darted out and gobbled it up right in front of me!

That's very cool Kim! I like that rock...very neat how the little ones hide out in it!

I've never seen rock like that. Thanks for sharing. If I see any, I'll have to pick it up.

I think it's man made rock, and we got it here at Super Pet. It was cheap on sale, but Steph says it's pretty expensive if not on sale.

It would be great in a Tropheus tank for the fry!
