Title: two-face, the fish
Description: never seen anything like it

Matt B. - September 21, 2008 12:19 AM (GMT)
Hmmmm a little while ago I bought 4 g1/f1 white calvus...you can check out that topic here if you want to.

but anyway,

I don't know how many of you have seen "Batman: the dark night"....but if you have....you know how Harvey Dent is in the explosion, and gets burnt and deformed, and turns into "two-face".........well....I have a similar situation with my fish (minus the explosion)

they were all normal.....and a few days ago....one of them suddenly turned black on one side of it's face

Here is the normal side

and then, what it looks like from the front...it looks like the colour change is perfectly straight down the centre of his head

and, the black face side

I have no idea what caused this.....at first I thought maybe he somehow got burnt by the heater.....or he got in a fight....but there is absolutely no damage to his eye...and the black just stops at the end of the gill plate.

could it have been something I did....or didn't do?

the others are all fine......even "two face" seems perfectly fine...just the fact that one side of his face is black.

Has anyone ever seen anything like this?......I know I havn't Hmmmm

thanks,
Matt

Try looking up myco. Mycobacteriosis marinum. Sometimes it will affect a fish in the manner of your fish. There are other things it could be, just suggesting something possible.

I did some research on myco, and if that is it, I am a little concerned right now....from what I gathered, this is pretty serious. I also read that coming in contact with this fish can spread the disease to humans, which is really bad twitchy blinky ..... Is that true....if so...what do I do?

I'm not quite sure that it is, in fact, myco.....from a long list of signs/symptoms that I found, the only one that matches is lightening/darkening of pigment.

this fish seems perfectly fine...he/she eats well, it doesn't look like it has lost weight at all (which apparently, is a very common symptom of myco), it doesn't look sickly at all, and it doesn't have any sort of ulcers that are visible (which is another common symptom)

truthfully, if I was a little less attentive to the condition of my fish, I would have easily missed this......this fish looks like it is in perfect condition, until it turns around and you see the dark side of it's face.

I have done a ton of google searches for fish with a similar condition, but have had no luck. Hmmmm

anyone else have any other suggestions/opinions?

Matt,

I have heard of this a long time ago, but can't remember what the outcome was.

Here's a little more info that might give you another direction to research. Hope it helps. http://en.allexperts.com/

Thanks for the link aura

hopefully it is the same thing that the guy was describing

the telltale symptom is that it is only on one side.  It doesn't seem to affect them much but it is very interesting.

I hate to do this, but considering the fact that I have received 2 guesses as to what this could be (one being very serious, and the other, being the exact opposite).....I am going to try to post this topic on another forum.......to see if I can get a definitive answer.............I will let you know what I find out

thanks again for the responses.....and if anyone else knows what this is, please help me out.

I see no problem with posting this in other places. You increase your chances of finding an answer if more people see it. Just let us know what you find out and good luck with it.

If you could let us know what you have found out, and give us an update on the situation.

well.....so far.....nothing.....just more people saying that they have no idea what it is, and they don't know what I should do.

WOW,,,,Thats intersting.

Heres a thought....how about putting this fish into a tank of its own to see what happens. Some people would just cull it because they dont know what the future brings for it. Maybe..just maybe,,it's a mix to a White and Black Calvus??????

Are you sure they are f1's??? Remember if fish breed over and over and over and over and over and over and over again,,,,,such deformalities can happen???

Keep us posted.

I thought of that....but I don't have any tanks that are empty.

well.....they came from a pretty reliable source.....so I don't think the guy would have claimed that they were g1/f1, if they weren't.

right now, I'm pretty convinced that the description in the link Aura posted, is the closest thing to what this is........in that link, the guy said it is just nerve damage, and doesn't really effect the fish.......

of all the research I have done, that is the closest description of what this looks like.

I don't think I'm going to kill it......unless it ends up being a serious problem....

and, I think, if it was a hybrid, the whole head would be black...not just one side.

i not sure if im any help but my male brevis has something like that.
it was on his body and it gradually spread towards his face and all. It was only a stripe when i got him. its harmless. i think he has to do with something genetic. it just spread over his body and hes fine. hes around 4 or 5years old now.
