Title: What do they mean?
Description: Lighting questions

I'm getting the bug again to turn some green stuff to mush. I'm trying to keep my purchases to plants that have a light rating of "low", (i.e. Java Fern, Anubias and crypts)
This is my question what do the plant people call a wpg rating for low, medium and high light requirements and of course the catchall term of average? It is confusing to me any ways but that's not saying much.
Any light you can shed (no pun intended) will be appreciated.
Cheers!!!

My friend has java fern in a 55 gall with 40 watts of light, so wpg is not so crucial for wpg. Most low light plants will do well with about 1.5 wpg. Right now I have 72 watts on my 37 (almost 2 wpg) and my crypts are thriving, but I have a little more algae that I want. I would stick about 1.5 wpg and you'll be able to grow the stuff you are interested in.

Thanks Yodahorn.
As of now I have a 40w shoplight on my 55 plant and Tang tank. Note I use the word plant not planted since I only have one Crypt in the tank as of now. I'll think I'll upgrade to a twin tube shoplight and see what happens. Whether or not the plant survives in a hard water, high ph is another story. I'll have to get a pic of the plant before it melts.

my water is 8.2 ph out of the tank, so the hard water should not mater. Also, if crypts look bad initially after you plant them, it is normal - call crypt wilt - they will bounce back. When you add light don't exceed 2 wpg or you'll be fighting algae. good luck!

oops, forgot to mention. I also use Seachem Flourish once a week.
