Title: Lockjaw?

Ever seen this? This is one of the fry I sold to my friend...estherae 'minos reef' female. The rest are fairly big and healthy and this girl seems like some of her fins are a bit torn, but nothing serious and one of the smaller ones. Look at her mouth.

Just for clarification...her mouth is stuck open like that! He had me look at the fish and isn't sure that it will recover and is wondering what to do? Euthanize it?

Perhalps from the fighting this fish has been in that it may have damaged the jaw.Take her out and carefully try to relocate the jaw.Push up from the bottom of the jaw as if to close it.Slowly.Sometimes you need to hold onto the sides of the jaw as well.I have had this happen to me and the fish has had a full recovery.I would assume this fish has not always been like this otherwise you wouldnt have sold it so Its probably some form of injury. If not then euthanize it.

Derek is right...The jaw can be manipulated back into place. Most people do it by holding the fish in a larger net, and using the net between their hands and the fish to manipulate the jaw back into place.

If it's been that way too long, it might not be "fixable" and they might have to euthanize.

I would agree too that it may be from fighting. I remember on another forum we had this same discusion concerning a Calvus. I also remember that the Calvus was left alone in another tank to see if it would eventually pop back in itself,,,,guess what,,,it did. So maybe give it some time?

Had this exact thing happen to a Polit I had, I netted Him and gripped both sides of the jaw and before I could push the bottom jaw up it popped in place itself.
