Title: Books on Cichlids
bluetaz - May 8, 2008 02:03 PM (GMT)
I've been to the library to check out books with general information and identification of Lake Malawi Cichlids but haven't had any luck at the local branch. Do any of you have any books you would recommend? Since I don't go back to school until the fall, I thought this summer may be a good time for me to learn more about my new hobby. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Hey Sister, we both need to buy the new "Bible" on cichlids by Ad Konings!
It is called...
Lake Malawi Cichlids in their Natural Habitat, 4th edition
It ain't cheap, and my cheap brother-in-law would probably die
of a heart attack if you bought one (but you could pay for it easily
when the insurance money came in)!
They run around 75 dollars, but I hear they are worth every penny!
If we got one, maybe we could get lucky enough to have Ad Konings sign
it for us when we go to Cleveland Ohio for the OCA in November!
As far as the library, see if they can find a 2nd or 3rd edition of this book!
Good luck!

I have the 4th edition book and it is a very good one. There are some others listed on this site.
http://cichlidpress.com/.
Good luck finding any at the library. I tried every library in my area and couldn't locate any.

Thanks bro! Cheap is true, but I'll have to say, I have spent a lot in the last few months on all the fish stuff and he's been totally fine with it. (I think he feels sorry for me working nights & going to school. I think I'll milk it for as long as I can. lol) BTW, I could buy more than a fish book with the life insurance, but I would rather have him around. I mean, who would help me clean my tanks? jj I'm not sure but that's probably the book that Feeder's Supply has. I'll check it out. Sounds like a good Mother's Day present (or maybe not if he reads this). Maybe you can get one for Father's Day or your B-day.
Aura, you're probably right about the library. Thanks for the website info. I'll check it out. Tres Bien!

I have the new 4th Edition as well, but I also have the Barron's Educational series books, which are no where near as thorough but the "Lake Malawi Cichlids" one has a bit more info on aquarium care and husbandry with descriptions of the more popular species. I've seen this at my library too and it's only $10 or so to buy.

What you need is to build a library... like this -
My Cichlid BooksActually, just got a new book the other day I'm all excited about....
Popular History of the Aquarium by SOWERBY, GEORGE 1857It's fascinating. Is mainly saltwater but there was a small freshwater section. There is a really interesting description of stickleback breeding in it.

Bluetaz, try ebay. I have gotten most of my books there. Sometimes cheap. I got 5 for 3.65 plus shipping. Cichlids of Lake Malawi cd-rom is great. 5122 pictures. of fish and the lake. It is by Ad Konings.

It's one of the neatest books I have in my possession. They really described things well then. I guess they had to, no pictures and no videos. On the Floor Laughing
