Title: Egg Tumblers
Description: Breeding Cichlids

Hello all.
New here, must say I love this forum, seems like a good bunch with lots of knowledge.
I mostly keep large Malawi Haps, plus have a young colony of Frontosa(Kitumba)
I have just stripped my female N. linni, have a few eggs tumbling with a few hatchlings already in the tumbler.
This is my first tumbler experience, have always let the mother go to term so to speak.
How long do you tumble eggs before transfering hatchlings(fry) to a tank to raise as normal fry?
Thanks,
Nigel

Hi Nigel,
I've only tumbled eggs a couple of times. I only had three the first time, so there was plenty of room and I kept them in there until their eggs sacs were almost gone. Another time I had several and I was worried they were too crowded, so I removed them when they were a little younger, but could still swim around and not be lying on the bottom. Of course they are far more crowded in the mother's mouth.
Hopefully, someone who has more tumbling experience can advise.

Hi Nigel,
I used to move the fry out of the tumbler once they had depleted most of their yolk sac and were no longer "spinners"- that is- when they were able to swim on their own as opposed to spinning in circles. In the fry grow out tank, I would put a sponger over the syphon tube of the filter to avoid having them get sucked up or against the filter strainer
Also because the sponge would catch bits of crushed flake which they would readily eat of the sponge. Hope that helps

Hi Nigel, Like Aura I've also only tumbled a few times. When I did I took them out of the tumbler when there was almost no egg sacks left. I then moved them to a breeders net in their own tank till they were all comfortable swimming and then away they went to venture around in their tank.

I wait until they have absorbed most of their egg sac, and are actively trying to move around. They don't really eat until that point anyway, usually once they are ready I move them to a breeder net deal. Make sure there aren't other fry with them of different ages right away, or that tumbling work might end up being mostly killed off.
I use the jehmco model tumbler, which has a detachable section that the fry are in. I simply just transfer them all with that bottom part to the new tank or net.
Good luck
