Title: 125 Gallon Stocking.
Description: What to do???!
JamesRiggs - May 6, 2008 02:29 PM (GMT)
I am picking up my 125 today, it is coming with a UGF 2 power heads, 2 Magnum 350 canister filters, lights, hoods, and heaters. I wont set it up immediately because I dont think it is going to have a stand, So I will need to build one. Anyway, what do you guys think I should stock it with?

I'm assuming since you posted in the Lake Tang. section that you are thinking
of stocking this 125 with tangs.
Really, its a matter of individual preferences.
Do you want to house a lot of smaller species or do you want to have
a few of the bigger species of tangs?
Klaus will be delighted to help you with tang choices!
Now about the UGF filter, you may hear about that and if it were me, and
I know its not, I would not opt for the Magnum 350s either.
There are much better canister filters on the market in a similar price range than
these are.
But again, its a matter of individual preferences!
Good luck and let us know what you eventually decide!

I I prolly wont use the UGF at all, I normally only run Hagen products. I am a big fluval guy. All this stuff comes with the tank for $400 OR I can only get one magnum and a bunch of CA cichlids. Seeing as how I have no interest in CA cichlids I opted for the extra filter. I thought I would fill the magnums with matrix by seachem and that would make them better.
edit: it is a used tank, and this guy is selling all of this with it.
cturner - May 6, 2008 03:40 PM (GMT)
Wow that's not a bad deal with all that stuff! Yeah if your a hagen man fill up those magnums with a bunch of bio-media and slap a fluval or 2 on that thing for polishing.
I wish I could help you with stocking suggestions but for Tangs I wouldn't know where to start. I've only kept shell dwellers.
Of course everyone is different in their personal pickings.

Well I went and picked up the 125 today, bad back and all. He gave me a bit more than I had expected. I got the 125, hood and lights(not really what I had expected, it is custom made), 2 magnum 350 (one is a deluxe), about 6 large powerheads, a 10 gallon, a 29 gallon, 2 10 gallon iron stands, a 20 long iron stand, some glass tops, a miriad of lights, quite a few air pumps, about 10 UGFs, and two boxes he said have more power filters in but I have yet to go through them. Most of the stuff I may not use but all in all not bad for $400.

It sounds like you got a pretty good deal to me. Tres Bien!
Is it all in decent condition?
cturner - May 6, 2008 09:53 PM (GMT)
Well there you go keep what you might use in the future and sell the rest to pay for some fish!

It was not in the condition that I had hoped, but I did find it on craigslist so for a non show tank it will work. Now here is my question, Dont most 125 gallon tanks have a center divider? this one does not, and it is using 1/2" glass. Is this normal? I would post pics but I aggrivated my back more so I am on the heating pad, wife's orders! It says so right here!
JamesRiggs - May 7, 2008 12:12 AM (GMT)
Okay, so I snuck out and cleaned the tank, only one scratch on the glass, that is hopeful. The wife is out so she doesn't know :ph43r: I snapped some shots, tell me what ya'll think. My back started acting up again so I didnt go through the boxes in my shop.

It was filthy (the guy said he hadnt cleaned it in a year, looks like it was re-sealed at one time, but it does hold water, I saw it full and inspected it and it had no leaks..

is that seven feet? Seems short and long, oh well.
Do some sand sifters, gobies, julies, leleupi, comps/calvus, and a few shellies. It will be different without fronts and can be great. Also some cyps.

You know I thought the same thing, I am 6'1 and it is just a bit taller than I am...I think I may sneak out one more time! :ph43r:

Somebody's going to get caught!!
When you say divider, do you mean the center brace that connects from front to back?
Most of the ones I've seen have at least one. Hmmmm What kind of top does it have with it? Is it just one solid piece?

Yeah, the piece of plastic that connects the front to back, this one doesnt have one, no top either its a custom made canopy.
mike dunagan - May 7, 2008 01:10 AM (GMT)
odd looks like a old and custom tank!!!!!!!!!
JamesRiggs - May 7, 2008 01:23 AM (GMT)
Well Mike, YOU RUINED MY NIGHT! take that and that!
Justs kidding, although I am a bit mad, I measured it....its a 100 gallon 72x18x18. For all the stuff I got I still think I made out okay, but I am dissapointed. Why you little..
mike dunagan - May 7, 2008 01:43 AM (GMT)
super shellie tank!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
cturner - May 7, 2008 02:09 AM (GMT)
I think the older tanks had the 1/2" without a center brace. You should be okay with it. Even at 100 gallons I would be smiling from ear to ear! My next tank will be at least 6' long. I get tired of reaching to the bottom of my tank and getting a wet shirt!
That would be an awesome shellie tank! Bouncy
I'll be sitting on the edge of my seat to see what you decide to put in it. Now this should be good!
Now go get on the heating pad! kimmy Nanananaa
multies - May 7, 2008 02:40 AM (GMT)
PB what happened to Multies?? did you forget that i love tangs?!
but what are your goals for the tank? breeding, show, activity, etc ,etc
super shellie tank would be like 1000+shells
100+multies/similis/callipterus/calliurus.
any colonizing fish. well callipterus dont really live in colonies but the males will gladly take in females!
my choice of stocking would be
10paracyps
some of those tanganyikan killi's(long hard fish name which i havent learned to memorize)
a nice group of Occies or some xenotilapia flavipinnis
and a pair of Neolamprologus buescheri (i just love them. just need to find some to try them out)
JamesRiggs - May 7, 2008 03:02 AM (GMT)
Could I keep all of those shellies together?
mike dunagan - May 7, 2008 11:43 PM (GMT)
never tried a tank that large, could try it.
yodahorn - June 3, 2008 05:21 PM (GMT)
what's the latest on this tank? pics?
Cichlidman - July 30, 2008 04:12 AM (GMT)
I got this tank. I am going to build a stand and set it up.
preacherboy - July 30, 2008 02:07 PM (GMT)
Way to go, Roger!
So, what are you going to stock it with now that you have it
in your possession?
PoohBear - July 30, 2008 05:50 PM (GMT)
Great find! When I saw the pic, I thought, "Hey, that looks like my tank!" We have almost the exact same tank measurements, except mine is two inches narrower, and I have a center glass brace. You'll have fun with this size. It's great for tangs!
Cichlidman - July 30, 2008 10:24 PM (GMT)
Not exactly sure. I will probably put some of my malawi cichlids in it. I really want to get rid of some of my smaller tanks.
I plan on doing larger instead od so many. I will keep you posted.
Albino Pleco II - August 1, 2008 02:42 PM (GMT)
What about a colony of Frontosa and some Yellow Calvus or some Comps.
Have you concidered other species????
If you not into breeding,,,,,,ever think about an all male 'show" tank.
People tend to think that an all male tank is boring,,me,,I have had these tanks set up and loved them all. They say some males will not show their full color without a female present??? NOT always the case.
Good luck with whatever you choose.
