Title: Vertical Striped Johanni

PGA - May 2, 2008 02:15 AM (GMT)
I have this Johanni.

I've always wondered about it, because I have not seen any pictures of Blue Johannis with vertical stripes. I finally got a camera, so I was hoping somebody could help me identify it. Do you think it's a hybrid, or some other species?

Thanks,
Philip

I can't see your pic, but johanni don't have vertical bars. They have horizontal stripes. Sometimes you can see irregular vertical barring crossing those stripes, but the horizontal stripes should be evident.

Let's try this...

This is really strange. I can see the image on one computer, but not on my laptop.

I'll try this one more time and see if it shows up. Hopefully we can get some ID help.

Have you looked at any pictures of Melanochromis interruptus for comparison?

I don't think it's pure Melanochromis anything. (I can only see the pic from home...)

Something is off about the facial features.

Now I am confused here,,,,,yeah yeah,,,,,AGAIN.

Who exactly is showing the pic???????

Besdies,,,,it's a cool looking fish IMO. I am even more surprised that somebody didnt say for you to cull it because it has different stripes. yikes

Hope you find an ID soon PGA.

It's PGA's fish, but for some reason the picture he/she posted is not always showing up and I couldn't see the one that Lisa posted either, so I reposted it yet another time.

At least one of them should be visible, I hope!

There are several Melanochromis with different facial features. I suspect one day that the larger Melanochromis will be split from the ones we tend to see in aquariums. Take a look at all the Melanochromis here.

I agree and am aware that many variants do have different facial features.

This particular one just doesn't have the "blunt" (for lack of a better word) facial features that I've seen in johanni around here.

It may be that I'm seeing things that aren't there because of the size and body fat on this particular fish. Something just doesn't seem quite right!

I have nowhere near the depth of experience of some others here, but the fish in the pic shows attributes I identify with different species, rather than looking like a unique species from a Konings book.

Don't mean to sound negative -- look back in the archives and you'll find me doing similar posts with fish I really enjoy but who turned out to be hybrids. I still have them, but don't allow them to spawn.

Thanks for posting this interesting pic!

whatever it is, it is beautiful

Good for you "Pseudo",,,,,some people will cull there fish for being hybrid or for have a "defect". I applaud that you still have them and not breeding them. But that's a different thread!!!!! the Clap

PGA,,,,does this fish have a mate with the same characteristics?????

Have you found an ID yet??

The other fish that I picked up with this one looked like normal Melanochromis, but there has been some breeding and it looks like some of the fry have these same stripes.

I can try and get some other pics if anybody thinks it will help.
