Title: overstocked - what to lose?
yodahorn - April 29, 2008 10:39 PM (GMT)
Thanks to recently winning two aquabid auction when I thought I'd only win one, my 37 gal column aquarium is now overstocked. Here is the fish list:
1 Large Koi Angel
Pair of Rainbow Cichlid
8 Juvie Red Breast Acara
1 Blue Acara
3 Silver Hatchets
4 swordtails
2 platties
3 mollies
5 bn plecos
1 reg pleco
What do you think I should get rid of?
Lisachromis - April 30, 2008 02:00 AM (GMT)
Well, if it was up to me....(I'm basing this on what will fit best, and not what my favourite fish are)
I'd get rid of....
8 Juvie Red Breast Acara
1 Blue Acara
3 bn plecos
1 reg pleco
That will leave you with...
1 Large Koi Angel
Pair of Rainbow Cichlid
3 Silver Hatchets
4 swordtails
2 platies
3 mollies
2 bn plecos
I still think that's a lot of fish, but much more manageable. I'm actually debating over the rainbow cichlids too.

I think Lisa's line of thought makes a lot of sense, but I'll play "devil's advocate" as a fanatical cichlid guy.
Of course, that means I'd keep both Acara, the Rainbow Cichlids and (if they don't pick on him) the angel, assuming that they all share similar diet and water condition needs. (I took a few minutes to look that up and they all seem pretty omniverous.)
And of course the BM Pleco's since they won;t get too big.
Other opinions?

I know I started this, but I thought about keeping all the cichlid except the blue acara as he'll get 6". The Rainbows can get 6", but rarely do, so I think that are full grown right now around the 4-5" mark. The Koi Angel can hold his own,; he is the tank boss. The red breast acara only get to be 3" and I don't need to keep all eight. The BN plecos will eventually be thinned out as thet one get bigger. So, one of my thoughts was.
Angel
Rainbow Cichild pair
4 Red Breast Acaras
5 BN plecos (for now)
3 Hatchets
Obviously I have not made up my mind or I would not have asked for you all's opinion.

not until the next house. we will probably move next year. We are starting to do up work on our existing house to get it ready to sell.

Hey Yodahorn, I wouldn't mind having some BN plecos for my new tank.
Let me know when you want to get rid of them and I'll come over and pick
them up!

Angel
Rainbow Cichild pair
4 Red Breast Acaras
5 BN plecos (for now)
3 Hatchets
The list above is what I have decided to go with. The acaras could get narrowed down to 3 later as they become easier to sex. The hathcets just look really cool swimming in and out of the floating plants. I am going to take out the rocks in the center of the tank and just put a cave (on its way from Petsmart.com) in one of the back corners to open up more floor space. The cave is for the Rainbows as they are already showing signs of breeding. Them breeding may ultimately decide the fish list.

i would recommend you to stay with the following a pair of rainbow cichlids will take all of the tank just for them and even kill the rest. so stay with
1 Large Koi Angel
8 Juvie Red Breast Acara
1 Blue Acara
3 Silver Hatchets
5 bn plecos
yodahorn - May 13, 2008 02:23 AM (GMT)
This is what I've kept
1 Large Koi Angel (Frosty)
8 Juvie Red Breast Acara (numbers may be reduced later)
3 Silver Hatchets
5 bn plecos (numbers will be reduced later)
and I found a guy selling large beautiful angels locally (thinning out his tank) for $10, so today I bought Frosty a girlfriend, a silver angel that my girls named Mattie.

Yoda it looks like she was harrassed a little bit. She'll be stunning when her fins grow back.
It looks like your plants are doing really well too!
yodahorn - May 14, 2008 01:15 AM (GMT)
Turns out the little red breast acaras are nipping her fins as is Frosty, so my attempt at match making seems to have failed.
