Title: Mbuna attack syno (Was Synodontis schoutedeni)

Anyone have any experience with these? I just treated myself to buying one.

Now treat us to a picture. Drooly

Him being a syno who was just rousted out of his tank of 6 months and dropped in a new home, that may take a few days! Giggly

I can hear Preacherboy saying, "Recently getting pictures from Don appears to take a few decades!"

I do love this San Francisco LFS. They openly tell you how long they have had a fish. All their tanks are luxuriously planted and all the plants are thriving, even the ones in the tank with Demasoni!

Hey Don, I seem to be saying a lot of things around here lately! On the Floor Laughing

BTW, I can't even say, "Recently..." because to my knowledge, you've never
submitted a pic for the photo contest. Hmmmm

It's a good time to start friend! Now this should be good!

Obviously, Kim and Aura don't work at this LFS! Nanananaa

Just joking ladies! Giggly

I'd love to see a picture of your new synodontis too, pseudo!

And preacherboy -- user posted image -- my fava fern root is starting to sprout -- I haven't given up yet!

Pseudo, that sounds like a nice fish store. It must be difficult to catch fish in the planted tanks without making a mess of things though.

Grrrr Grrrr Grrrr

I moved around all the rocks to create new territories. I added him at lights out. He was big enough to intimidate anyone in the tank.

And now it appears my Demasoni (or maybe my one Estherae?) have attacked the new Syno and since they appear to have attacked his eyes I think I need to euthanize him.

This is the same thing that happened to a Syno in an LFS recently as well.

Any suggestions for other things I should have done so I learn from this?

Oh no Pseudo; I'm really sorry to hear that.

I don't know if there was anything you could have done differently. I have six synodontis in my mbuna tanks and have never had anything like that happen. That's really too bad.

Pseudospecialops - April 15, 2008 05:34 AM (GMT)

My Eupterus grew up with the juvies in his tank.

My Lace syno never came out the first three months in his tank with the juvies, and because he was so small he could hide out.

The guy was 4 inches long, so even though I created lots of new spots for him and re-started the Demasoni territory scramble someone went after him.

Maybe my lesson is that with Mbuna and Syno's I have to get them small so they have more hiding places?

I obviously missed a bet somewhere.

Changed title of post to solicit feedback so I learn from this. Why you little..

Thanks.

Honestly, I think you have to add cats/plecos early on in the stages of a tank to be relatively confident that they will survive.

I've never added any later into a tank, but I've seen tons of posts on CF where exactly what you are describing has happened.

No words of wisdom here...Just sympathy...

Aura, are you still trying to resurrect that twig? blinky

Talk about optimism! Giggly

I now own stock in Michael's...Silk is the way to go!

Well I have added juvie petricola to an adult mbuna tank with no issues. Maybe the difference is the petricola are constantly on the go vs a non rift lake syno. that has a tendency to hide more. So the mbuna attacked it because it was hiding in their spots.

Kim
If you have any plecos those silk plants will not last. After about 6 months the edges of the silk leaves looked like frayed jeans.

Dave, they will still look considerably better than the brown leaves I used to call "real" plants. Giggly

I'll just replace them. If I could find realistic looking plastic plants, I would use them.

Euthanized him tonight, but I just felt so guilty for putting him in harm's way. I hate it when I feel like I let down a fish that has to depend on me for its safety. worry wart!
