Title: Do Demasoni hold as long as larger Mbuna?

Pseudospecialops - April 2, 2008 06:41 AM (GMT)
I have a little female holding and I'm trying to figure out if I can wait till the weekend to tear apart the tank and somehow separate the right fish.

That tank reminds me of the top-hat museum heist scene in The Thomas Crown Affair! How will I ever spot the right clone?

Thanks!

Yep! Well occasionally you might get the early spitters but that's with any female. It all depends on if she feels comfortable spitting early, on time or hanging on to them for a while. I always did notice though in my tank when I left them in the tank to spit and didn't seperate them they always held a little longer than expected. Of course experience on her part to will clue you in on when she might spit.

Ditto what cturner said. That's been my experience as well. I have had some go way longer than they should and even though I didn't want to keep fry, I had to pull them anyway for fear of losing the mom.

You will not have fun trying to catch that one elusive holder and my advice would be to have an assistant to be the spotter who can help you by keeping an eye on the correct fish. This person should be over the age of 18 and not be offended by the language that you will resort to after the frustration sets in.

Of course, you might get lucky and catch her quickly, but not likely.

Good luck! ayeaura

I never noticed any difference between the demasoni and my other mbuna as far as holding times go.

When she's ready (or you're ready - if her schedule conflicts with yours), stick her in a turkey baster and shoot those fry out into your fry tank!

Just a FYI...Different age groups of demasoni fry do amazingly well together...I don't know if it has to do with the fact that they are herbivores, or what, but I had really good luck mixing fry of all sizes.

The yellow labs and albino socolofi are probably fine, but I gotta get that Estherae out of the Demasoni tank.

Thanks for the feedback!

I find that the size has no effect on the spitting. I am in agreement that their comfort zone does. If they are comfortable they spit earlier, than if they are concerned with the fish around them. I move them to a tank by themselves. Still it varies by as much as 10 days
