Title: UV Steriliser & Supplier Review

Windowlicka - April 1, 2008 04:55 PM (GMT)
So I bit the bullet - I'm going through quote an algae rampage on all 3 of my tanks right now (none in direct sunlight, but my Aqualight T5's are radiating for +/- 11 hours each day. I know I could turn the lights off sooner, but then my plants would suffer...)

I received my first Coralife UV steriliser yesterday, and promptly installed it on my 65g (would've put it on my 90g first, but that damned C360 uses different size tubing to every other manufacturer, so the outlets on the UV won't fit it - I have to spend more money to buy the bigger UV unit for that tank).

Also having issues with the 2 Marineland HOB's on my 20g long - they're so blooming noisy it's just ridiculous... I'm sure it's a sand/impeller issue, aided by my Tang Shelly's constantly trying to immitate Debbie Travis home re-modelling; but I just can't be bothered with Marineland products ever again, so I've decided to rip them off , replacing them with an XP1 (after seeding/cycling of course)& a UV instead.

I bought the UV units and the XP1 all from locally-based www.MOPS.ca (Hamilton, ON), and I have to tell you, those guys are awesome... very competitive pricing, and great guys to work with. A smaller company, but I've put three orders with them now, and the deliveries have been prompt, and the service excellent (I have NO affiliation/connection with them, other than as a satisfied client!). I'm not 100% sure about board protocol (and whether I can make recommendations like this), but I was VERY impressed with these guys, and wholeheartedly encourage others to at least check them out...

I hope this helps to remedy some of the cloudy/green water issues, and my fish can turn their wipers off to see around the tanks! I'll let you know how it all works out...

Cheers!

I'll be interested to know how the UV sterilizer works. My niece's tank has a green water problem that we can't get under control and I'm thinking a sterilizer might be what she will end up needing.

Thanks, Aura. I've just got home from work and so far the UV has been running for 24 hours on the 65g.

I did a 50% waterchange last night when I installed the UV unit (had to clear the canister outlet pipe of water before cutting it)... I've got none of the white cloudiness (that then turns green) that I was having troubles with before, so I'm quietly optimistic so far...

So how has that sterilizer been working out? Now this should be good!

HI All

Just wondering if these are worth purchasing, or was it all hype.

Thanks

Sorry guys, I've been delinquent in checking posts of late (work pressures, family commitments and the usual plethora of BS excuses...!)

I put an 18W Coralife steriliser on my 90G, and it cleared my algae problem within 24 hours (the water was crystal clear)... I still had residual algae on rock formations and the glass, but that was to be expected.

I was so impressed with the results that I bought two more Coralifes - one for my 20G and one for my 65G. Money well spent in my opinion - I've not looked back yet.

My only challenge was adding the steriliser to the 90G - 'cos of Marineland's insistence to use odd size fittings on their C360 canister, I had to heat the tubes in order to stretch them onto the sterilisers fittings... this would not have been an issue had I tried to use the steriliser on my XP3, however I use a Hydor inline on the output of that canister...

Adding the sterilisers to the XP2 on my 65G was a breeze, and likewisse onto the XP1 filtering my 20G...

HTH?

Cheers.
