Title: Rena XP4
Ted - June 30, 2007 02:03 AM (GMT)
Is anyone using these canister filters on their tanks ?? I'm thinking about going to this filter when I get the new tank. I hear a lot of good stuff about them.

Are you asking about the xp4 specifically, or the xp series?
I have five xp filters and they all work great. I've never used any other brand, so I can't compare them, but they are really easy to maintain and pretty quiet as well.
I have looked at the xp4, but it was so expensive that I could almost get two xp3s for the same price. As a matter of fact, at Big Al's online right now, their sale price on the xp3 is half the price of the 4.

Aura ,I was asking about the XP4. I have not looked at the XP3 yet, maybe I should take a look at them. I know the xp4 is expensive but the prices I've seen at that fish place are fairly reasonable.
The LFS where I'm getting my tank is the guy who told me about the XP4 he made it sound really good . what do you run the XP3's on ?

Ted, I run two XP4's on my 150g and love them. I am not a big fan of canisters filters because they usually are a pain to clean and are very expensive but the XP4's are super. Very easy to disconnect without making a mess and the cleaning is simple and easy. I can only recommend them. Good Job

I have the xp3s on 75 gallon tanks along with Aquaclear110s. I'm gradually trying to replace the Aquaclears because they give me so much trouble.
The info on the xp4 says it filters 450 gph - the xp3 is 350 gph. I think you get one extra media basket with the xp4. Each basket holds quite a bit of material.
Bigalsonline has the xp4 for $180 and the xp3 for $90 right now.
They are all designed the same way and are so easy to work with, that whichever one you decide to go with, I'm sure you'll like it.

Hey Ted!
I have the same set up as Aura, except I am having
no trouble with my AC110. (knock on wood!)
The XP series are very good canister filters.
I got mine from That Fish Place through the internet
and they price matched BigAls. From all the bad reviews
about BigAls shipping problems, I chose TFP instead.
Petsmart will also sell you a XP for the price listed on their
online store. Be sure to bring in a copy of the page from
internet, however!

Thanks for all the information on these, I'm leaning on the XP4 I need enough filtration for a 220 gallon . I can start getting the filters now to get ready but the wall in our rec room wont be ready for another month or so. maybe longer. progress is slow. how many filters would you guys recommend for this tank using the XP4 ?

On a tank that large, I would think you may need
to go with a sump as well.
I would probably use 2 XP4's and maybe a AC110.
But I'm no expert and I am waiting to see for myself
what the response will be from those who know!
I have always heard that when you start reaching the
the 100-125 gallon mark, it's time to consider a sump.

you know your not the first one to tell me this. blinky I'm not really up to date with sumps and how they are actually used, I have a couple friends with them on their 180 and 220 gallon tanks so I guess I could do some checking to see about them.
today I firmed up a deal with a young girl who is buying my 75 set up. she and her father are coming over this weekend to get the tank. she is going into Malawians so on her birthday they are coming here to pick up.
back on topic, I may not get a 220 now. it does not look like it'll fit after the wall is done. my wife is buying all new furniture for the rec room and she tells me I'm taking up too much space.. LOL 4larry . so I may scale back to a 150 I may be able to go into a 180 but I'm not sure.. I'm a little bummed about having to go with a smaller tank then I wanted but I guess it'll be easier to do water changes. either way a 150 will be good enough for frontosa .

Glad to hear you sold your tank to someone who
is going into African Cichlids; and a young person
to boot!
I'm glad also to hear that you're considering a sump
filter as well.
I'm sure your friends can give you the pros and cons
of using one.
Keep us posted!

Who needs furniture when that valuable space can be used for larger tanks???
Ted - July 7, 2007 03:55 PM (GMT)
Yeah I told my wife what you said about the furniture. uh she wants to meet you.. be careful she has a mean streak. Help!
I wanted to Give the girl the some fry today but she is not ready for them yet. she is not setting up the tank until next week or so. she was looking very excited when she was viewing my 125 with the Mbuna in it. that was a nice feeling to see someone so happy to be getting a larger tank. LOL I think we all know how that feels don't we ????
I also gave her a link to this place.
