Saw some nice 3" juvie Geophagus surinamensis in the LFS today and started thinking about how (in a world where I had infinite tank space) a community tank with them as the anchor cichlid would be a cool contrast to all my Malawi tanks.
Anyone have experience with them? I know Klaus and Mongo have Tapajos.
Wow Don, nice to hear that you are looking at something else then Malawi the Clap the Clap the Clap
I do not have any experience with the Surinamensis types but I know that most fish offered offered under that name in the trade are a different fish. So make sure that the fish you have seen really are Surinamensis.
Now if they really are Surinamensis, you better make sure that you have a large tank for the since they will grow to over 10".
I hope I did not ruin your newly dveloped interest in these fish because that was not my intention. Just some friendly advise Tres Bien!
Good Luck Cheers!!!
Klaus, you gave me exactly what I think Cichlid Haven is all about: fast, considerate, accurate advice from someone who sincerely wants yo be of help.
So my reaction is: thanks! Tres Bien!
I had community tanks back in the 1970's and 80's, and had one Geophagus at the time. Though back then in the LFS's it was mislabeled Jurupari or just called Earth-eater. I remember it clearly and it was a Geophagus. He wasn;t big enough to develop a lot of color so I'll never know his species.
