Title: This is what I did today

cturner - February 24, 2008 03:58 AM (GMT)
Okay so I sweet talked the hubby into letting me take down the 10 gallon with the shrimp and set-up the 20 long in it's place (I needed more room for plants to grow). Plus I picked up some ghost shrimp to go with the red cherry shrimp I have.

That's so strange CT. I was just thinking about your shrimps and posted in your other thread Hmmmm

What is that net thingy in the middle of your tank?

Other than that i think the tank is looking good, just a bit smokey in there, maybe you should add an exhaust fan Giggly

the net thing is for the mossy plants.
ive seen those before and those are pretty cool.
the plant grows on top of the net and it stays. looks alot like a plant carpet.

looking very nice!

It's actually HC Cuba, I couldn't tell you what the full name is! It's a small stem plant and the mesh stuff helps to keep it in the gravel till the roots grow down and hold it in the substrate, it does turn into a carpet when it grows out!

What a difference a few hours makes! Look nice.

What are you using for substrate? Is it something made for aquatic plants?

cturner - February 25, 2008 02:54 AM (GMT)
Yeah it's eco-complete with black onyx sand on top.

Very nice tank and set up, Rena!

I have always liked the look of a long tank!

They make lower gallon tanks appear larger than they
really are and they make great planted tanks!

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the update, Rena!

Does the moss tend to ball up like that and can you
separate it?

I'm not suggesting that you separate it, I'm just asking if
it balls up and can you separate it if you want to!

Yeah with Java moss you can take a small section about the size of a quarter and tie it to anything and it will grow into a big bush like that! I have to take some of it out and put it in another tank. I started growing it on a coconut cut in half that I bought, it started growing into the driftwood and other plants so I've been slowly pulling bits of it off and putting it on my driftwood in the 90g. Some people make java moss walls as a backdrop using crafting square stuff. Aura knows what I'm talking about, she uses the craft stuff for breeder boxes.

I use that plastic stuff for everything, cturner! It has 1001 uses.

Your java moss looks great. That is one plant that I have that I haven't killed yet. I was becoming overrun with it, so I took it out of the tank and put it in a bucket and left it outside only to discover that it's still growing. I have some attached to a piece of driftwood in one tank, and it's great in fry tanks.

One problem that I have is that it gets pulled into the filter and wraps around the impeller and clogs up in the intake. Have you had to deal with that? It also seems to hold a lot of gunk that gets trapped in it and is a pain to keep clean.

that stuff looks cool Tres Bien!

cturner - May 21, 2008 08:23 PM (GMT)
I don't have to worry about it in the shrimp tank as I have a pre-filter sponge on the intake. In the 90 on the driftwood I have it tied down so good I don't have to worry about it. The shrimp seem to keep it pretty clean other than the other plants getting stuck in it!

cturner - May 21, 2008 09:25 PM (GMT)
Oh, I forgot to update you guys on the shrimp! The Ghost Shrimp have dwindled down to 2 and the Red Cherry Shrimp are multiplying like crazy!!! Tres Bien! The shrimp and snails keep the 20g spotless!!!!!! Oh yea, and my Snail population is unbelievable too!!!
