Title: Here is some information.
Description: For Alto. lovers.
Albino Pleco II - February 23, 2008 03:08 PM (GMT)
Heres a little something for our Alto. lovers to fall back on for some needed info.
Altolamprologus calvus
Altolamprologus compressicaeps
Altolamprologus fasciatus
Altolamprologus sp Sumbu
Altolamprologus sp Shell
Behaviour in the wild
Altolamprologus are predators, eating the eggs and fry of other fish, as well as aquatic invertebrates.
The lateral compression of their bodies and thick scales help them get into rocky cracks and crevices to capture their prey.
They are not a schooling fish, hunting on their own.
The thick scales also provide protection against the attack of cichlids guarding their eggs and fry
Sexing
Males are larger than females.
In all species, the females are about 1/2 to 1/3 the size of the males.
Fully mature males have noticeably more elongated finnage and are higher bodied.
Aquarium behaviour
This fish can be kept in pairs or colonies.
They are capable of fending for themselves without being overly aggressive to tankmates.
The entire genus of Altolamprologus is ideal for Tanganyikan community environments.
They can also be kept with many of the cichlids from Lake Malawi and Lake Victoria.
Altolamprologus are not territorial and are not aggresisve towards cichlids of a similar size to them.
Aquarium diet
Altolamprologus readily accept most foods: flakes, freeze-dried, frozen, and live.
A combination of these is recommended.
In aquarium environments, it is rare to see Altolamprologus eat other fishes.
What You Need to Know
Altolamprologus do not compete as aggressively for aquarium food as do most African cichlids.
This fact, combined with the slow growth rate of young specimens, means that the aquarist needs to exercise special care to ensure that they get enough to eat.
This especially applies to young fish.
Compatability and Decoration
Altolamprologus are relatively quiet, slow-moving cichlids.
They are most comfortable when kept with most other Tanganyikan cichlids.
They do not appreciate the company of super-active species such as Tropheus and the Mbuna complex from Lake Malawi. Tropheus and some of the other more vegetarian Tanganyikans and Malawis are also not suitable tankmates as the diet is incompatible with that of Altolamprologus.
Smaller, or dwarf, varieties - Sumbu and Shell can be kept in a tank of minimum 60 centimetres.
The larger species need a bigger tank - minimum around 100 centimetres.
Shells and plenty of rock work should be used in housing these fish, as the females often take refuge inside. In the wild they are always associated with the rocky habitat of Lake Tanganyika.
Breeding
Females will find a spawning site, normally a cave, crevice, or shell, too small for the male to enter.
Females can spawn every 25-35 days when kept in condition.
The fish may spawn on the substrate or in elevated areas.
This fish is a very secretive spawner. It is fairly easy to overlook actual spawns.
They usually form pairs and spawn in the shells, although they may practice polygamy if an excess of females is present in the tank.

Hey Geelite, it's not plagerism when you identify your
source material!
That's the difference between plagerism and research;
giving proper credit where due, or taking credit when its not!
