Title: What are your thoughts on air freshener?

bradley - February 13, 2008 01:13 AM (GMT)
Hey guys, can using air freshener in the fishroom pose any threats? Do the chemicals settle and possibly contaminate the water? Thanks,
Brad

multies - February 13, 2008 01:56 AM (GMT)
do you mean air freshneners as in like fabreeze(spellin correct?)

you could always shoot it to the ground.

in my gr.7 class, some stupid kids used to put the air freshener stuff in the 10G tank with plants. they all seemed fine.

(no im not in gr.7)

bradley - February 13, 2008 02:09 AM (GMT)
yeah thats what im refering to. yeah im completely not sure but have always been sceptic of it in the fishroom...

anyone else?

cturner - February 13, 2008 03:21 PM (GMT)
I wouldn't do it! I used to use the spray "all" for fabrics around the house in the spring when I would first open the windows on a beautiful day just to bring a crisp smell to everything. I don't dare spray anything in the same room as my tanks anymore. Including and not limited to glass cleaner & dusting spray. Call me weird but I'd rather be safe then sorry. If you have an oder problem use a plug in or a candle when your in the room.

ABYSS - February 13, 2008 10:28 PM (GMT)
Hey Brad you know how small my fish room is . And i spray lysol on the floor and in the air away from my tanks .And i all so spray all around my wet/dry . But first i cover it so i don't get any inside. And i also spray my wooden stand.
I like to spray lysol to stop Germs and to kill any mold. Good Job

multies - February 14, 2008 12:24 AM (GMT)
i dont know if this helps but i put my colgne in my room and i have 2 fish tanks set up there. one has no lids.

and i use windex on my tanks to make it look shiny :)
none of my fish have died on that. 90% of all my fishes die because they either get killed or they jump out :( they jump out even when i have lids..

I would say that spraying a deordorizer in the room with the tanks is fine. If it's that bad in there (odor wise)???? Wouldnt a little cleaner enviorment be better for them???? And cleaning the glass with windex,,,,come on people,,,these are all fine!!!!

Heres some to think about.

This has come up in other forums before, remember I dont know what every member does for work. But think about what you do all day.

What about people putting their hands into the tanks w/out washing their hands first. W'eve all done. We take for granted that our hands are clean. Hmmmm

If one works on cars,,,what about oils and such reisdue on the hands,,under the fingernails? Even after they wash them,,,what about the soaps?

Ladies that use moisturizures on their hands,,make-up,fingernail polish???

People who work outside all day in dirt, mud, concrete, chemicals.

What really goes into the water when we clean our tanks?????

Where do we store all our cleaning supplies such as the hoses for vacuming the tanks???? Are they cleaned when they sit somewhere when we are done using them????

How often do we change the "gadgets" when we use them for cleaning such as sponges, scrapers, ect.ect.ect.??

We all have extras of "aquascaping decor". Plants, rocks, wood, ect.ect.ect. If your like me and keep them in a 5 gal pails, but you store them away clean,,,do you always rinse them before putting them back in???????????

Just a couple things to think about.

So Bradley,,,I would think that a little air freshener would be just fine. Good Job

I always wash my hand and arm before I mess around with the tank. I have never put my face inside the tank so make-up isn't a problem, and when fingernail polish is dry, it's perfectly safe. Good Job

I think if I were going to spray a freshener around, I would keep it down low, so nothing would settle down on the water - just to be on the safe side.

Giggly

Just examples.

Kim - February 16, 2008 08:38 PM (GMT)
Seriously, Aura??? You NEVER put your face in the tank? Giggly

I contaminated a tank once with some of the self tanning lotion, and lost a couple of fish over it.

I have the plug in air fresheners all over the place, and I burn scented candles pretty much all the time. I used sprays sometimes, and don't really think anything about it...But I am conscious of NOT directing them towards the tanks.

I would not advise using windex on your tanks.Windex contains ammonia and through osmosis will seep into the tank.If you do use windex and havent lost any fish consider yourself lucky.LOL.I use water and vinagar or there is a new window cleaner that is out that shoppers drug mart carries that is made of all natural ingrediants that Im looking into.I also spay lysol every once in awhile on the floor but never in the air

Oky doky. Since i'm really tired and cant think and write properly tonight, i will TRY to keep it short...cause i could really answer alot of APII's questions Faint

I never use air fresheners and never will around my tanks. I do use scented candles even if some of my friends think its GAY for a guy to use them ayeaura . When i clean my glass i use windex but i only spray on the cloth and then wipe the glass, i never spray windex on the glass directly...i hardly clean the glass by the way, dont need to unless "Cat" leaves his prints.

I also always wash my hands up to my arms with water only and NO i never had a girlfriend stick her face in my tank Giggly

Mongo - February 17, 2008 07:36 AM (GMT)
I have to say, I was kind of worried when I saw the title to this thread. The only air freshener in the Mongo household is on the back of the toilet. Who in their right mind sprays AF around fish tanks...fish cant smell that well, and if you gots an odor problem around your fish tanks, you might have other things to worry about.

I will say this...I have two boys. One is 6 and the other is 5, and since they have become ambulatory...we have found all kinds of interesting things floating in different tanks...half eaten chicken legs...G.I. Joes...hot wheels (they actualy sink)...Barbies (terrorizing their older sister no doubt)...dog toys...hair brushes...even a couple of mommies make-up brushes...and of course the old throw a tampon in and watch it swell like Super model after eating chili. And to date, I have never lost one fish to "floatees". So I think as long as ya dont coat the surface of the water with a nice shiny oily film of AF, you should be fine to do a little "spritzing" to...uhm...clear the air in your fish room.

buntbarsch - February 17, 2008 02:29 PM (GMT)
Well, most of the "older" members know my view on anything chemical in my fish room. IMO they just don't belong there. The only chemicals I have in my fish room is a water testing kit (which I use maybe once a year) and a good supply of Clout just in case my Tropheus develop bloat. Just the thought of using Windex on my tanks gives me the "willies" and I as Mongo said, if you need an air freshener in your fish room you definitely have another problem to worry about.

Albino Pleco II - February 17, 2008 02:55 PM (GMT)
worry wart! Boy am I getting alot of hits from the "make-up" question????
bring it on! peek a boo

Thats to funny .

Mongo,,I'm glad somebody wrote in about finding things floating in tanks such as toys and such that were thrown in from children. We all knoiw how dirty kids toys can get!!!! Good Job

So "geelite",,,,you've NEVER even put your girlfriends face into your tank either???? Hmmmm (or even thought about it) Giggly On the Floor Laughing

lol!
maybe when your washroom has a cloge you will go to your fish tank to wash your face :) and bursh your teeth

Les - February 18, 2008 05:23 PM (GMT)
First, if your fish room smells- simple fix- try some carbon. I get clobbered all over forums by people who say it isnt necessary. Its not I agree. But then my tanks dont smell either so I dont need air freshners.

this is actually funny to me:

I dont know about the osmosis concept Derek. Thats a rather bold statement. I believe thats been contrived and handed down through the years to encourage healthy practices around aquariums. While I would never condone the use of Windex to clean the inside of a dry aquarium or on any part of the hood, I havent see any problem personally in 25 years of fish keeping with applying it directly to a paper towel to clean the outside glass.

Also, I think Water and vinegar is "all natural ingredients" too. At least thats what they advertise on those feminine commercials Nanananaa

Albino Pleco II - February 19, 2008 03:35 AM (GMT)
Giggly,,,,sounds like a poor mans salad dressing to me. A cheap Vinagrette. Nanananaa

Were probably going to get his It says so right here! for those hits Les. On the Floor Laughing

You know,,,I dont recall what the smell was that Bradley was trying to deodorize???
Is it the musky smell of the water? Or just the room itself? (I don't mean to call you a dirty slob,,,but you brought it up) Nanananaa

If thats what it is,,then I would have to agree with Les,,,Ammo Carb works wonders. I used that in all my tanks and never had a problem with musky fish water smell. Even if I DONT do water changes for 2-3 months. yikes
