cturner - February 12, 2008 01:30 AM (GMT)
I don't know much about jags but I do know that if they are 2 females they will still lay eggs if they are sexually mature they just won't be fertilized.

chris_d1983 - February 12, 2008 02:56 PM (GMT)
thanks but, the only problem is i don't know if they are male or female

cturner - February 12, 2008 03:01 PM (GMT)
I found this site on jags I hope this helps you identify them. How big are they? It sounds like you might have 2 females.

now the real hard things where do i find 5-6 " jag so i can breed them

cturner - February 12, 2008 07:20 PM (GMT)
I don't think you want to breed them in a 55 g. let alone with other fish in the tank. But check you LFS to see if anyone has traded any in or see if they can put you on a waiting list.

I agree that it sounds as if you have two females. If it were a male and female, odds are the other fish wouldn't still be alive after they spawned the first time. blinky

These fish aren't going to be able to stay in this tank together, Chris. You might get away with keeping a pair of JD's in a 55G, but the other fish are going to require larger spaces, and won't be able to be housed together.

Kim's comment makes sense to me -- I know bigger tanks are expensive as I'm saving up as well.

Beautiful fish in those shots!

chris_d1983 - February 13, 2008 06:11 PM (GMT)
the one thing that throws me off is that before they paired up they did that courting thing that they do to try and impress each other and now they are always together would they still do that if it were females only and yes i plan on at least putting the two jags and the flowerhorn together and leaveing the green terrors and jd together would that be better

chris_d1983 - February 13, 2008 06:14 PM (GMT)
and you know when you said if it were male female the other fish would of been dead the first time well you were close the jags won't let the fish get even half way across the tank and it seems this time they are even more agressive then the last times

chris_d1983 - February 13, 2008 07:10 PM (GMT)
now if i seprate the jags from the rest of the tank with a tank divider or if i get a smaller tank for breeding should i get a tank to remove my other fish or should i just remove the jags from the tank what would be better to do cause right now i dont have another tank yet so i planed on just putting a divider in the tank for now would that be a good idea or no

Kim - February 13, 2008 08:12 PM (GMT)
I'm sorry, Chris, but the green terror alone will need the 55G tank to himself.

Moving the jags to the larger tank is a good idea, but moving the flowerhorn with them isn't.

The way I see it, you need a separate tank for the flowerhorn, another for the JD, and the tank for the jags...

Not quite what you want to hear, I know...But once these fish all mature, you're going to have some serious problems.

no not at all what i wanted to hear ought these fish from a lfs they told me they would all be ok together thats why i got these fish if they would of told me that it would not work out i would of picked the ones i liked and only gotten like to of them so if you can list what size tank would be good for each set of fish i have so i can prepare myself for the future may the fish be with you

Kim - February 13, 2008 11:46 PM (GMT)
Don't feel bad, Chris...We've all been led astray by a LFS somewhere along the way...

The two JD's might be okay in a 75G, if they are a pair. And even then, you may have to seperate them at times.

The GT could stay in the 55G, the flowerhorn might be okay in another 55G alone, but I wouldn't try to house them together long term...

You will need a 6 foot tank for the jags, but even if they are a pair, I would keep a divider handy...These guys can get up to 16 inches in length and when they get angry, they get angry! They are also super sensitive to water quality, and will need a bit more TLC on the tank maintenance than your average cichlid.

Am I missing something?

no you got every thing in that one i was looking at fish tanks yesterday and i found a 125 long and that is six feet now what would be better 125L or a 120D just curios.

preacherboy - February 14, 2008 02:44 PM (GMT)
Its an individual preference on tank dimensions. In keeping cichlids,
the footprint is a very important factor to consider.

The 120 Deep will be more difficult to clean because of its
depth, but if you're tall and have long arms, then it will probably
not be a problem.

I jus think the long tanks are more asthetic to the eye and tend to
make the tank look bigger than it really is. Cleaning the tank is also
much easier as well.

Good luck on your decision.

Kim - February 14, 2008 03:09 PM (GMT)
You'll need the length for the jags, Chris...The depth won't be a factor.

is there anyone from the chi town area on this forum and i was looking at a 125L at it is going to range me about 630.00 for tank, stand, and lights i don't know how much everything eles going to cost me and one other things what is a good filter for something that big Faint

cturner - February 15, 2008 03:27 PM (GMT)
Check craigslist.com or ebay. You might be able to find some really good deals there.

chris_d1983 - February 15, 2008 06:41 PM (GMT)
yes there are some good deals but every thing is so far away from me that it wouldn't be that good of a deal after i drive to where ever it is at i don't know what to do right now

Kim - February 15, 2008 08:03 PM (GMT)
Chris, I'm not sure where you really want to go with this, but if it were leading me in a direction I wasn't comfortable with, I would be asking the LFS to take back some fish, since they were the ones who steered you in the wrong direction to start with!

Big angry fish are great, but I can't imagine dedicating that many large tanks to 1 and 2 fish.

There are far too many other fish out there that have just as much attitude and appeal and can be kept in circumstances that are easier to achieve!

I am getting near to purchasing a 125 tank with lights, hood, and stand
for around 699.00.

So 630.00 sounds reasonable!

As far as filtration goes, there are many ways to go!

I am going with 2 canisters(XP3 and a Marineland C360) and 2 AC110s!
