I would have to say that our oldest fish right now would be a synodontis...They hide in the rocks and we forget that we have them! They would probably be around 6 years old now.
We keep different species all the time due to limited space for tanks, so our stock list is constantly changing.

This is my oldest fish, or I should say, the one I've had the longest. He was one of three blue gouramis that I bought to cycle my tank when we moved into our new house.
Looking pretty old at 5+ years.

I have a few cichlids that I've had for about 5 years. Unlike most hobbyists, once I buy a fish, it's mine until it dies. I've given away a few fry, but I have yet to sell or trade a grown fish. They become like pets and I just can't part with them.

Aura, do you remember seeing pics of that gourami that Pete and I saw in a LFS here that was over 25 years old??? He finally died last year.
I have a friend here who has a Synodontis that he got in 1985! That's over 20 years old!

So, what is the average life expectancy of a cichlid? Hmmmm Now this should be good!
Aura - February 12, 2008 03:02 PM (GMT)
No Kim, I don't remember or I didn't see them. Twenty-five years! yikes That had to be really sad to lose a fish after that many years.

My oldest fish are a Taiwan Reef male and a Copadichromis Chrysonotus male. They are by my estimate 5 years old each.
Here is a recent pic

I gave away the last of my cichlids this spring when my last tank cracked and spilled water all over the living room floor. I was able to save all of the fish by bringing them to my friend's store. My wife cried when I brought this guy to the store that day.

We had this particular Synodontis flavitaeniatus for 8+ years. He ended up back at the store where I had originally purchased him from.

My Dad still has a rather faded goldfish that occupys an unfiltered, unlit 55G on his lonesome - his last +22 year old Weather Loach tank-mate passed on just over a year ago...
Every now and then his swim bladder plays up, and he'll spend a day or so upside down, before righting himself and continuing on his way!
I "won" this goldie at a funfair when I was 8 years old. I'm now 37!

Wow, Windowlicka, that's amazing.
