Title: Fuzzy wood

labama - February 2, 2008 05:58 PM (GMT)
I have never seen this before, but the wood in my tank is getting fuzzy. Brown fuzzy. And this brown fuzzy stuff is making a mess getting in the intake tubes.
I have had the wood for some time few years maybe. I dont have any algea eaters of any kind and not even sure if the would help.

Please help.
Thanks

do it look like something growing on the word or like the wood is peeling off?

geelite - February 2, 2008 06:21 PM (GMT)
Hi Labama, what about the after it got fuzzy...any pix? Are you talking about hair algae?

If its hair algae then it can be 2 things. Nutrients or Lighting.

If nutrients then you need a water change or your filter is too dirty and needs a change.

If lighting then you need to reduce your lighting time or could also be the wrong spectrum which i'm not sure in FW, i know in SW it is.

Lol nice one Labama Giggly

The pix are not very clear so i'm not sure of what it is. I would just wait till the rest of the gang check it out.

You should do your water parameter testing to get a better idea of whats going on.

Geelite I wish I could test my water but I dont own a test kit.
If I need one I could go pick one up.....In 6 years I have never tested my water.
After all these years and now all this stuff is cropping up in my tank. roll eyes
Driving me nuts....looking on the bright side Im learning alot of new stuff.

Labama, I don't know what it is, but I had the same thing on one piece of wood (only one) of the three in the tank.

I moved one of my plecos in there and by morning the wood was cleaned up and there was a ton of poop on the sand.

So after doing alil reading on brown algae which Im now thinking it is. I did the following...Picked up a chocolate pleco, and a golden algae eater. I changed the bulbs to something brighter, because I saw somewhere low lights can cause brown hair algae.
I hope the BP's dont mind they prefer dim lights. Then I got a test kit. Well I found out my nitrates were high and so was my ammonia..I did a 50% water change.
And I found out I have hard water. I learned something new. Wooo hoo!!

Then I cleaned my hob and put in new filter media. Now my filter sounds aweful....ARGHHH dumb dumb
Im not sure how to fix the aqua clear. And after what I dumped at the lfs a new filter not so much an option right now.
If it isnt one thing its another.

Well let me know if I missed anything...please

Thanks again

Leslianne

Labama, if the golden algae eater is not a pleco of some kind, watch it like a hawk! I have had Chinese algae eaters turn into vampires who mistake my other fish for blood banks.

Hope this helps!

Leslianne I have that stuff on my Malaysian driftwood too. It goes away when you up the lighting. Whether it's brown algae I'm not sure, but I would assume so with the upped lighting.

As for your AC what type of noise is it making?? If it's the motor you might have to take the motor off, take the impeller out and clean the shafts real good. If you have a pair of needle nose pliers you can carefully pull out the metal rod in the motor and throughly clean the motor. When your done put the metal rod in upsidedown from when you pulled it out. Then take an extremely small amount of vasaline (don't worry it's safe) and put that on the metal rod with a q-tip. Slide the impeller on and put the motor back onto the body, fill with water and start. That should take care of the problem. If not pm me I might be able to help you out.

Thankfully taking apart the filter motor didnt need to be done. To be honest cturner I really wasnt looking forward to it. Sounded like beyond a pain in the....

Anyway the really bad sound it was making has now stopped. It is working just fine and is as quiet as the day I bought it.

Now lets hope the fuzzy stuff goes away.

One more thing...
When I retest my water tomorrow if the nitrates and amonia levels are still high...is it ok to do back to back water changes?

I just want to thank you guys...y'all are so helpful.

Glad to hear the filter is nice and quite now!

You could do daily water changes for as long as you want as long as they aren't too large. I would probably do 15%-25% daily till you get those readings down.
