Title: My dream tank come true
buntbarsch - June 26, 2007 02:03 AM (GMT)
Most people around here know me as a "Tropheus Nut" and they are probably right. However, about 30 years ago I used to keep SA cichlids but always used my bigger tanks for my "first love" Tropheus. The thought of a big SA tank has never left my mind and a few month ago I just did it. I sold my Frontosas and changed the 150g into the tank I always wanted.
Here it is:

and here are the inhabitants:
Geophagus sp. "Tapajos Red"

Geophagus Altifrons

Klaus...I need a towel for the drool on the floor! I absolutely love that tank and you know how much you tease me by showing pictures!!!
I keep thinking of selling my fronts as well and getting some geophagus as well...you cause fish addiction problems you know! :ph43r:

Beautiful tank, fish, and pic!
I have a question, but it is not related to the
SA fish, but to the background on this tank.
What is it? It looks like the paint color of the wall
behind the tank.
It really set the mood of the tank.

Really nice tank, Klaus -- and the way it's planted makes for a great overall look. Drooly

That tank is absolutely beautiful!!
It looks like the kind of tank that you can just sit and watch and actually relax while doing so.
Very nice.

PB, this is a home made plywood tank. The first two epoxy coats had a gray color. The next two layers were clear coat.

Derek, the only place I can think of to them wild is Oliver Lucanis in Montreal.
http://www.belowwater.com/Home.htmlHe is specialized in hard to find fish.

Klaus you know how those fish make me drool!
Another place to look is Jeff Rapps at
http://www.tangledupincichlids.com/ I am not sure he ships to Canada, but probably does. He has the largest selection of wild SAs and CAs I have seen, got my gymnos from him and I can vouch for the quality of his fish.

The Altifrons will grow to about 8"- 9" while the Tapajos grow only to about 6"- 7".
All Geophagus do best when kept in groups. I have 6 Tapajos and 8 Altifrons in this tank (6' - 150g). Right now the dominant Tapajos male is approx 6" and the Altifrons are between 4" and 5". The only other fish in this tank are 2 pair of bristelnose plecos.
The Tapajos spawn on a regular basis but there are just too many fish in there to have any survivors. Sooner then later I will have to weed out some of the Altifrons and a couple of the Tapajos. Boo Hooo Boo Hooo

That sounds like a fish for Mongo! They are really beautiful! I'm really starting to appreciate the SA's so much more.
How is the aggression level with these guys?

Hey Scott, nice to see you around again the Clap the Clap
I have to admit that I'm getting more and more into the SA's, especially the earth eaters. The next SA tank is taking shape already inside my head. I have my eyes on a fairly rare type of earth eater. Retroculus xinguensis or Retroculus lapidifer are swimming in that tank Drooly Drooly . Just have to find some Hmmmm Hmmmm
Oh well, just need to be patient right ??????????

cowchick - August 7, 2007 11:47 PM (GMT)
And what a gorgeous monster that is Klaus!
