geelite - January 13, 2008 04:58 PM (GMT)
Hi All.
There is a person near me selling these fish. He has 9 of them and needs to get rid of them ASAP, he is giving me all 9 for US$ 24.
Can anyone tell me what type of Cichlids they are? and what you all think of the price?

Hi Geelite,
I agree with cturner about that last one, but don't know about the others.
I'll move this over to the Identification forum and see if anyone else can help.

If you like them and trust the source of these cichlids,
then I think $24 for 9 fish is a good deal!
They do look a little fat in the pics, however.
It may be due to the "camera affect!" Giggly
Have you seen them eat?
Ask the owner to let you watch the fish at feeding time
and then determine whether or not to purchase them.
The last thing you want to do is to introduce sick fish into
your tank.
Just a thought!
Good luck!

Hello preacherboy,
Well i found them on my network on Facebook. I also checked with another person i know on the net & he thinks that they are hybrids, so i'm just gonna let it go & try to have a little more patience with my empty tank...or i'm thinking of adding some other non cichlid fish first Hmmmm
preacherboy - January 14, 2008 03:21 PM (GMT)
Patience is a virtue that not very many possess!
I know I don't!
I do have a question for you.
"How are you keeping your empty tank cycled while you wait
to begin adding your fish?"
geelite - January 14, 2008 03:55 PM (GMT)
What do you mean exactly preacherboy regarding the cycle? Well i had the Melanochromis auratus in there and had to take them back, so they helped me with a bit of cycling. I checked my water chemistry and all good. I'm gonna do another test now.

Hey Geelite, sorry I didn't reply yesterday, but just as I got through
typing my response, I lost my internet connection for the rest of the day! Grrrr
What I mean by keeping the tank cycled is that if your good bacteria
don't have a constant food source (fish waste, added ammonia, etc.) then
they will die of starvation very quickly. Faint
You will need to keep "feeding" your tank's bacteria until your fish arrives. fishy
You can do this by adding pure ammonia or by placing some dither fish in the
tank until you get your new fish. Good Job
Good luck and HTH! Prboy

Hello preacherboy Hi!
I had a problem too with my laptop yesterday and ended up reinstalling my windows all day today yikes
Well my fish have arrived this morning and HOPEFULLY will pick them up tomorrow afternoon...but that's not it, yet i got another problem which i will post a thread about it now worry wart!
Oh back to the cycling subject roll eyes ...my tank has been cycling with no fish now for a week since i got rid of the Melanochromis Devils Melafix fix!
Aura - January 15, 2008 08:23 PM (GMT)
Geelite, running your tank with no fish in it isn't the same as "cycling" it. Like preacherboy was explaining, you need something to feed the bacteria or they will die off.
Since your tank is so large, you probably won't have any immediate problems if you don't add too many fish at once. Just keep an eye on your water parameters to make sure you don't have a spike in your ammonia and/or nitrite readings.
Do you have any other tanks running with fish that you can borrow some filter media from?

No, i just have a SW refugium that is only housing various algae. I was going to take them with me and sell them tomorrow when i was SUPPOSED to bring home my new fish.
cturner - January 15, 2008 09:25 PM (GMT)
I would talk with your LFS about borrowing something that's seeded with good bacteria when you do get your fish. Then you won't have to worry about cycling it.

Will do...Thank you Cheers!!!

The majority are Metriclima Zebra "OB" (Orange blotch)
The others in the tank are Tilapia Mozambique,,,,these fish only need to be within a distance of about 5 km's to breed.
All are mouthbreeders!
Cheers,Larry

Cool, you are the only person on the net who got them all Good Job

Thanks "G"!
I checked out Cichlid Forum to get the right name for the fish,
but Mozambique Mouthbrooders,,,is still easily recognized as
the name for this fish.
The new name is listed there (on CF) with some really bad pictures
of the common coloration of the fish.
I bred this fish a long time ago,,,seems with that long snout and
mouth always got twisted a bit as they grow out to breeder size.
If you need feeder fish for predators this is the fish to own! On the Floor Laughing
Cheers,Larry

I'll echo that! I bred my Mozambique Mouthbreeder in 1976 and I didn't know ANYTHING about cichlids!
