Title: When to put momma back in main tank

I have a zebra that is holding in a 5.5 gallon tank. How long after she releases her fry do I wait before putting her in the main tank?

If you have the space to hold her and feed her for a few days, I would do so.

If you only have the 5G tank that she is in and plan to use it for the fry, then I would remove her within a day or so, in an effort to keep her from eating the fry. This can be kind of tricky, though, since they will often scoop the fry back into their mouths when you approach the tank. (I think this is what got me started stripping, initially!)

When you do put her back in the main tank, make sure you do it at lights out, so that the male won't be too hard on her.

Good luck!

that was a fast response! Would the zebra fry (when born) be in danger if a placed a holding saulosi in with them?

You just never know, yodahorn...

I've had holding moms flip out totally over something else being in the tank with them and swallow their own eggs/fry.

Other times, I've had holding moms take the other fish's fry into her mouth, as well as her own!

How about putting a breeder net in the fry tank for the holding mom? Or you could put it in the main tank with the mom in it? I've done that before in a pinch.

Kim, what do you think about the breeder boxes that
are V shaped at the bottom to allow the fry to pass through? Hmmmm

it if come to putting the holding saulosi in with zebra fry, I thinl I'll put a pile of small rock for the fry to hide from the saulosi.
