Title: General Hardness (GH) Too High
geelite - December 19, 2007 11:16 PM (GMT)
What should a Malawi tank GH be? Anybody know how to lower it? Should i use RO/DI water?

What is your GH?? It's been awhile since I tested mine. When I tested it I read the book that comes with the test and my range fell right in line with the recommended GH for Africans. I think a GH of 7 or higher is recommended.

Are you testing out of the tap and in your tank?? Try testing 1 small cup of water from the tap with an air stone in it for 24 hrs and also right out of the tap.
Ohhh what's your PH out of the tap and in the tank??

I just tested my water from my tap and its 7 GH, so i guess my tank water is high.
RO/DI water is 1 GH.

You might have something in your tank like substrate or rocks that is making it higher.
stratofish - December 21, 2007 02:12 PM (GMT)
RO/DI water shouldn't have any hardness to it at all. This process is supposed to remove all minerals/magnesium/calcium etc and therefore GH, KH should be 0.
Thats my understanding anyway.

Yes you are right stratofish, that is why i am thinking i either mix RO 30% and tap water 70% or i just use RO water with marine aquarium salt.
