Title: Wiped out

labama - December 17, 2007 09:36 PM (GMT)
I notice on Wes. 2 fish have cloudy eyes. By the time I get Melafix from the store I have lost 3 fish. Next morning Im down 4 that night 1 more. Anyway by Friday I have lost all. I had someone coming on Sat. to buy them all. He did buy some tanks tho. Anyway whatever this cloudy eye white fuzzy stuff was it wiped out my tank in no time. It was wicked. Can someone tell me what it was. I have to say I have dealt with ick before but never anything like this.
Im going to restock the tank with tetras and stuff while I have my house on the market. It feels empty with out fish. Good cleaning and plants few fish. Cant wait.
If anyone can clue me in on what this was thanks

I looked that disease up and they didnt get the saddle area on their backs.
And this looked like it started in the eyes first.

Hmmmmm

No expertise here but I just wanted to weigh in and say I was sorry to hear about what happened.

Had you introduced new plants, fish, rocks or foods recently?

I have to agree with preacherboy. It does sound like Columnaris. That's about the only thing I know of that will take your fish down that quickly and isn't water quality related. And, I can tell you from experience that the "saddle" effect isn't always there.

I lost an entire tank of breeding groups a couple of years ago to it.

I would be very hesitant to add more fish without doing some heavy duty cleaning on the tank. It's highly contagious, spreads very quickly in warmer temps (if you ever suspect it again, drop your temp to 76 and this will slow it down until you can treat with broad spectrum antibiotics) and it's deadly.

It always starts in the face area, usually around the gills and mouth.

Oh no, that is really too bad that you lost them all.

I remember from a while back that you don't do water changes on your tanks, but just topped of when needed. Are you still doing it that way?

I'm just wondering if the high nitrates that would be present would lead to illnesses being harder to treat and wiping out the inhabitants more quickly?

I did change my water changing routine just soo something like this wouldnt happen. Bought a python and everything. Nothing new had been added so Im not sure...Maybe having the painters hovering around the tank stressed them out.

Yeah I will be doing a heavy duty cleaning before i add anything.

Thanks guys for your ideas.

Thanks Hans for your reply. I dont use a air pump however that dosnt mean they didnt get anything in the tank or filter. Hmm anyway still sucks.
