Title: Buildingmy custom freshwater stingray setup

bradley - December 2, 2007 11:20 PM (GMT)
For the last month we have been working away on building a setup to house and potentially breed freshwater stingrays. the plan is to build a tank from acrylic with the help of dave at abyss acrylic works, that measures 96x48" footprint. the bigger the footprint, the better, so i figured go as big as i could for what i had space for. the tank will only be 15" tall to keep the price down, and the rays do not really need anything taller. i found 15" is fine with my other tank i kept rays in was 48x24x15". To make up for the low tank, the stand is just over 4 feet tall, so it is at a comfortable distance to see through the front pane, aswell as being able to look over it for maintnence and such. Can't wait for this setup to be done! my hopes are to have it setup the end of the following weekend, filled and cycling over the christmas holidays while we are away, so that when i get back in early january, it will be fully cycled, and ready to go.

Hey guys, finished the stand tonight. i hope to later on finish it with a nice skirt and some doors, but it will do just fine for now as this whole project is costing enough LoL!
I have put some thought into it, and i think i want for species:
1:2 Hystrix Pineapples 16"+
1 Leopoldi (pictured) if i can get it 8"+
1 Tiger Ray 10"+
1:1 Antenna ray

If i get lucky enough to breed these rays, it will be the pineapples. I know that they would be coming into breeding size, so they wouldnt hybridize (as rtays often do) with the tiger or leopoldi, and the antenna rays are of a different species.
I hope to bring in what i want for the tank eaerly january.

This sounds like a fun project.

I just tried Googling the pineapple rays and came up with a bunch of recipes. blinky Where do these things come from?

aura, they cme frm peru. search potamytrogon hystrix.

UPDATE
Filling up the tank as i type and let me say it loks amazing. david really did a Good Job on it. Right now as i do not have all the plumbing, i made temparary filters to get the media cycling. it has 2 10"x10"x15" overflow boxes which i stuck to 800gph pumps in at the bottom, which were covered in bio media and various sponges and seems to be working. I will try to get pics, but i have had little time and i need to find my cam charger.

Potamytrogon hystrix. That's a mouthful - no wonder they call it a pineapple ray!

I did a little searching under that name and still couldn't find it, but found it under this name - Potamotrygon Leopoldi.
