Title: I just picked up...
Description: pseudocrenilabrus nicholsi

stratofish - November 25, 2007 12:00 AM (GMT)
I just got a pair of these from Mike at Finatics here in Toronto. The female is even holding! He has a great selection of african cichlids and other tropicals. Dedicated store. highly recommended if your in the city.
anyway,

He called them Egyptian Mouthbrooders, although some research I have done suggests otherwise on this commom name. More research to do on this matter. They hail from the Congo area of west Africa residing predominately in lakes I believe. Here is a link to CF with a profile and pix. The male, even at one inch is starting to show some of these colours.

Once they calm down a bit and I sort out exactly where I'll put them long term, I'll take a picture or two.

Anybody out there cared for these guys? They've been around the hobby for quite a long time. But I haven't seen them around since I started in the hobby, which isn't too long really. So I thought I'd give them a try, they look like they have great colour potential.

Very nice looking fish from the CF profile!

Can't wait to see your fish pics!

If I'm not mistaken, I think Klaus or someone on this forum
had these!

Very nice find Strato. I did not know that Mike has them in his store.

Your research is correct. The come from a quite limited area in the Congo basin. I have my pair in a 35g by themselves. They are not fully grown yet but they did spawn already once. The colors of the male just blow me away every time I look at him.

You know what is shocking to me is that is my article on CF and I thought that was a good article at the time and then a few years later you realize how bad it is. Very cool fish. The tough part is getting females. Everyone has males. I beleive it a factor of the hard water and high pH that alot of have, but the broods are extremely male heavy for most people I know and personal expereince.

well I'm glad I got a female then. Shes not holding anymore, probably spat them or ate them. She is still very small.
Wingsrule, the article on CF is still pretty good IMO. I haven't found much better on the web yet. What would you change about it?

Klaus, or anybody else, what do you feed yours? How slow or fast do they grow?
Have you had predominately male broods as Wingsrule mentioned?

I was only able to secure a small pair. They have spawned once (probably the first time in their life) and the female held the eggs for a few days before she made a meal of them. I house them in a 35g with a couple of Inspector Plecos. The food I give them is mostly frozen (mysis, blood worms and adult brine shrimp) but they also take very willingly flakes. Growth is very slow IMO.

any updated pics?

stratofish - February 19, 2008 02:19 PM (GMT)
Hey Yodahorn, unfortunately the pics i would take now are of dead fish.
They along with 3 others I picked up have died. Not 100% sure why. My water parameters where all good. Although I could have had a high reading of Nitrates.
Or they didn't like my 40% water changes. Perhaps smaller changes next time.
Could have been bloat. At various stages some of them where not eating, then they would just start to wither away and finally sucumb to whatever it was.
