Title: Size Mix in the Grow-Out Tank

My 5 Ps. Socolofi fry are about 1" long now. As mentioned elsewhere, I'm creating a grow-out tank (my first) as their next stop.

Their Mom is only a little over 2". If I put her in the grow-out tank as well there doesn't seem to be a "swallow fry whole" risk due to her small size. Any other issues with this same-species mix?

I have a couple of other smaller Mbuna who are doing OK in the main tank, but clearly end up being close to the end of the chow line. They've grown more slowly than their brethren and are also about 2". Does the fact they're different species create additional risks if I add them to the grow-out tank?

In any event, as Kim once advised me, whatever mix I do will take place at a time when I can keep an eye on the tank the first couple of days!

Thanks for your feedback!

I think it would probably be okay to put those fish together if the tank is large enough and you have some smaller hiding places for the little ones to get away if they need to, but it really is hard to predict.

I've had it go both ways when I added small fish with larger ones. Usually they are left alone, but sometimes it gets pretty nasty. Even if they are too large to be a mouthful, they are still attacked.

Now what I do is add every fake plant, decoration, rocks, whatever I have around into the tank for lots of extra cover and watch very carefully for a while. If everything goes well, I remove the extra decor a couple of days later.

If you decide to try the mix, I hope it works out for you. It's so frustrating to raise those little fry up to a decent size and then see them get wiped out so quickly. Boo Hooo

I have fry from 1/2" to 2" demasoni in barebottom tanks with nothing until I decide what they're doing or who they're sold to. I have no problems whatsoever. That's just me, but I have so many flipping tanks and no time to spare and it works for me. Just a thought  Mind you I was drinking tonight haha
