Title: My fronts started eating her eggs

thiberts - November 14, 2007 02:46 AM (GMT)
I have 5 fronts is a 65 gall tank who are all doing well. My large and most mature female has had 2 successful broods. The first contained 34 fry and i left them in her for 2 weeks. The second brood contained 17 fry but i left them in for 4 weeks. Since then she has had 2 unsuccessfull attempts where she ate her eggs. I also had one other female who ate her eggs to. The day of the spawning it looks like shes carrying 30+ eggs the next day shes still carrying but only about half and the day after that there all gone.

Is it because she is hungry or being bullied. Could nutrition or water chem be a possability or do fronts do this from time to time

This is my first set of breeding cichlids and im am rather new to kepping and breeding cichlids. Any help would be great

Tank info
-65 gall
-temp=80
-PH= 8
-GH=10
-KH=8
- no amo or nitrite

I have no experience with fronts, but I have had a successful Mbuna Mom eat her eggs the next time out.

The advice I was given by others when this happened was, "These things happen. Keep doing your water changes, keep giving them their food and it'll be OK."

Hope this helps.

Yowsers...65 gallon tank for fronts? Are we talking about only 4 feet? If that's all you have to work with, she's probably getting bullied and has nowhere to hide. Just my thoughts..perhaps provide her with some hiding areas. Steph

Hi, thiberts.

Do you know your male / female ratio with the fronts? How large are they?

Are you noticing any more than usual aggression?

A 6 ft. tank is a better option, but people keep them in the size tank you are keeping them in successfully in smaller groups. It's not uncommon for females to eat their eggs in a 6 ft. tank, either. idunno

Did anything change in the tank before this last spawn?

Are the 5 fronts the only fish in the tank?

Kim
