Got my new Pine apple stingray from peru today. She is 16.5" inch in disk diameter, and over 25" long with tail. She's being kept in My 72x24x30 220g tank as its the biggest i currently have right now... Shes a beauty. Heres some pictures!

Totally amazing, Brad!

Is she by herself?

Probably not many suitable tankmates for her.

Are you planning on getting a larger tank to house her in
the near future?

i thought it was a she until i saw it swim up the wall, and its just that HE was smaller then usual claspers of the motoro. He is with my benthochromis tricoti. Since the tricoti stay at the top and the ray most of th time is on the sand they dont bother eachother at all.

OK, Brad, down on that fishroom floor and give usa 20 pushups for posting a non-cichlid pic! On the Floor Laughing

Seriously, that's a gorgeous ray. They're illegal to keep in California. Are they endangered? Is it realistic to breed them?

bradley - November 6, 2007 08:48 PM (GMT)
they can be bred, but its not ideal. most of the breeders are on germany, and the rays have to be 24"+ or even bigger for some of the larger species.
You need a HUGE tank, like thousands of gallons as even if you only keep a pair, the male will constantly harass the female. The even trickier part is that when they do breed, the male holds onto the female with his mouth often taring off most of the disk and stingrays do not heal well if sick or injured... they often die.
A site i visited before breeds motoros and has a breeder listing. they also have a few videos of the mother giving live birth to the pups. if i can find it again, i will post it. Very cool.

I am tring to get ahold of david to build me a new tank for these. looking at 8'x4'x1' so i can keep a few as the pineapple is already cramped in the 220g... needs more floor space,
Brad

just got the word from my parents. i'm having a custom tank built for my office for the end of this month. It is going to have a 4x8 footprint for my rays!

Very interesting! Those males are awfully rough in the spawning department...I'd hate to be a female ray. blinky

me as their son? (4x8 tank? Wow!) Prboy

We could be brothers and I would come up and help
