Title: Tips on Buying Rocks from Landscape Supply Places

Pseudospecialops - November 4, 2007 07:56 AM (GMT)

I was thinking of buying rocks for my 150G at a landscape supply place, where they're a lot cheaper than in an aquarium store.

Any suggestions on what varieties would be safe?

I'm assuming that "river rock" is OK, as well as slate and flagstone. Any flaws in that logic?

Thanks!

Those sound fine to me Pseudo. You'd probably want to stay away from anything metallic or rusty looking, but I'm not really sure how to tell what is not suitable.

I got a lot of my rock from a landscaping type place. There were so many piles of different types that my head was spinning. I couldn't decide so I just got a bunch (cheap enough) and I change them out for a different look once in a while.

Have fun crawling around in those rocks. Bouncy

My favorite rocks are big blocks of limestone. They not only look great but also help to keep the ph and hardness up.

I usually go in the spring to a large garden center close by. They get all their stones and rock work once a year (spring) and that's when I have the best selection.

Here are some pictures of my 6 foot 135g:

Another trick you can use is to take a squeeze bottle of vinegar with you. A few drops of vinegar and you can tell if the rock is safe. If it bubbles then I wouldnt use the rock in one of my tanks.
